Revell October Releases Audi Sport quattro SWB '84 Winner Safari Rally Ivory Coast 1984 S. Blomqvist & B. Cederberg ref. #08339 The Audi quattro revolutionised the Rally World Championships during the 1980s with its all-wheel drive system. The car rapidly became the standard by which all other rally cars were measured. The competition was not standing still however, and in 1983 Audi decided to give the ever more popular pure racing cars a run for their money with a newly designed vehicle. The new Sport quattro, characterised by its shorter wheelbase, was launched at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1983. It participated in rallies for the first time the following year. The Swedish team with Stig Blomqvist and Björn Cederberg had a convincing win in the Ivory Coast Rally in 1984 with the powerful, 450 hp Sport quattro, earning for themselves the World Championship title and regaining the Manufacturers' World Championship title for Audi. Audi Sport quattro SWB Rallye'85 Monte Carlo Rally 1985 W. Roehrl & Ch. Geistdoerfer ref. #08339 The successful Audi quattro, first presented in 1981, was soon to be replaced by the Sport quattro in 1983. Over the long term Audi was ultimately unable to keep up with the new, pure racing machines of the competition with a car based on a production vehicle. The primary difference between the Sport quattro and its predecessor was its shorter wheelbase. The visual similarity between the two cars was however deceptive - the Sport quattro was a complete new development. In 1984 Audi signed Walter Röhrl, a driver who already had two Rally World Championship titles under his belt. In 1985, when the Sport quattro entered its first full rally season, Röhrl, the "Genius on Wheels", competed in the Monte Carlo Rally along with his team colleague Christian Geistdörfer. Their remarkable success saw them take second position overall.
