Mas Slot has been published monthly in Spain for just over a year now. We all know Spain is a hotbed of slot-creativity, but so many of the publications are entirely in Spanish, or carry poor English translation alongside the original Spanish text. The publishers of Mas Slot have taken a bold step and they have produced an all English version of their magazine, and given it the title “Mas Slot International”. Like its Spanish counterpart, the International version will be a monthly release.
I guess the first question most of us will have is: do we need another magazine in our hobby? We already have Model Car Racing, Model Slot Car, Scale Auto Racing News, Guia Slot Racing, and more besides. And let’s not forget the online magazines too!

I like to read all the magazines. I like the online offerings, but I just can’t take the PC into the room where I
do most of my reading! I think there is still room for more magazines in our hobby because of the extremely wide range of interests within the hobby.

The first thing that strikes you when you pick up Mas Slot is the size! It is 80 plus pages thick and there are full color pictures on every page. Some of the Spanish issues published in the last year have run to more than 115 pages! Just looking at the pictures that’s a long read! In the new International the translation isn’t perfect, but it is a lot better than I expected; just the odd funny phrase here and there. This is a hefty read!
On to the content, and there is something for everyone here. There is a lengthy 6 or 7 pages of “what’s new” in cars from various manufacturers. This issue it is mostly cars and chassis. There is a section on 24th scale rallying. There is a comparative road test that goes into great depth: Fly Racing Porsche 911 Evo v. Slot.It Audi R8C, and write ups on the Ninco Clio S1600 (with the suspension system) and Vanquish MG McLaren M8D. There’s a collectors section
that talks in part about various Cobras. For the techies this issue carries a review of the Kelvin Light test bench including an accuracy test. Basement Racer or Club Track Pro; there is a lot which is worth reading.

At the very back is an article by a guy who builds tube frame slot cars. Unusual stuff but kind of cool!
The thing I love most about this magazine was that each article carried tables showing weights, dimensions, torque, RPM, lap times, Gauss readings, etc whatever was relevant. They stated clearly how and why each measurement was made. Tables are everywhere. Now I know how and RX41 compares to an NC-5!

Future issues promise lots of “how to” articles, more reviews and I for one, having finished Issue 1 am now eagerly awaiting Issue 2! And the price? Marked at 7 Euros, expect to see it for something around $8.50 depending on exchange rates.

Mas Slot International is available from Scale Auto Racing now.
