AFX Giant Raceway Set

AFX Giant Raceway Set

by Paul Shoemaker

Okay, so I have to ask, What’s better than getting an AFX race set? A BIG, well GIANT race set! And AFX meets that idea head-on with an absolutely huge race set. Sixty-two and half feet of pulse pounding, racing excitement and it can all fit into a 4 foot by 8 foot space! And this set has everything to make racing and exciting event. It has a squeeze track, cross-overs and even a 12 inch radius bank turn so you don’t have to slow down too much coming off the main straight. Match that with two classic, reliable Super G-Plus open wheel racers and you are ready for a throw down in your living room! But AFX didn’t stop there. Along with all this great stuff, they added the new Tri-Power power pack to this new set, giving you more options in what and how to drive the courses you set up.

The Tri-Power allows you to set the voltage the track receives. An 8, 12 and 22 volt option can allow a beginner to race at a slower pace until their skills improve and the settings on the voltage can be set higher. This works extremely well with various chassis types that perform better under a lower voltage setting. And you still get a full 1 AMP regardless of the voltage level, so the surge in power after one car de-slots is eliminated. AFX has matched up a perfect combination of fast, reliable cars, yards of track and the best set supplied power, for a racing experience all can enjoy right out of the box.

So What do you get???

Here’s what comes in the box:

The Track -

The track is the Tomy AFX design we are all familiar with. The push-together sections are easy to work with and ensure electrical connection when it’s assembled. Sixty-two feet is a lot of track. How much is a lot? Well...it took me 45 minutes to assemble the 4 foot by 8 foot layout complete with all the guard rails and bridge supports! What’s really nice is all of this does fit in a 4 ft. x 8 ft. area and AFX even gives you another layout that will squeeze all of this track into a 3ft-4inch x 6 ft. area. So this will fit in most family rooms or even your kid’s room and still be small enough to slide under the bed after the race.

Here’s the 4ft X 8ft design. A lot of racing in a reasonable area.

Here’s the 3ft-4inch X 6ft design.
This would easily slide under a child’s bed for easy storage after an afternoon of racing.

Here’s a couple of shots of the 4ft X 8ft design.
It was set up on a sheet of particle board and fit nicely with no over hang.

The Cars -

The cars are the venerable Super G+ chassis (narrow design) with Formula 1 bodies.
The cars are the white “Maniac” sponsored racer and the light blue, “Hurricane” sponsored car. The bodies are very colorful and easily seen on this sprawling layout, even in the multi-tiered bridges and under-passes. My samples were fast and ran very clean right out of the box. The handling of the Super G+, especially using the lower voltage setting on the Tri-Power pack, will be excellent for a first time racer.

Here are the liveries that come in the Giant Set.
The Super G+ chassis are a great beginners car and performs well enough for the experienced racer.
It responds well to the various voltage settings on the new Tri-Power packs that come in the set.

Here’s a few action scenes from the track.

Racing past the Grand Stands!

This layout is a snake pit! Lots of turns to challenge you and just enough straights to keep going fast!

AFX has done it again with the Giant Set! With so much track, you can build about anything you can dream up. And the layouts that are included in the set allow you to use all of the track and still keep in a manageable area. AFX has a lot of history and all of our memories to live up to and they did another outstanding job of meeting all of that with the new Giant Set!
