Fixing Broken Body Mounting Posts

Over time, or through accident, the cast mounting posts for mounting bodies can crack or strip out. Here's how I fixed mine.



Materials:

  • Injured slotcar, in this case a Fly Ferrari 512
  • Brass tubing. I used K&S #1147 3/16", available at hobby or model stores.
  • Wooden dowel. Should fit snugly in tubing, I used 5/32.
  • CA glue (aka super glue, crazy glue) thin consistency


  • Tools:

  • Tubing cutter, or Dremel with cutoff wheel, or hacksaw (in order of preference)
  • Fine file
  • Tapered reamer or countersink
  • Razor saw or model saw
  • Small drill and bits
  • Crosshead (Phillips) screwdriver
  • Sidecutters or flushcutters
  • Ruler
  • Felt-tip
  •  

    How To...

    1: Measure the height of the body posts, and cut brass tubing to this length. The front mount on the Fly required the tubing to be angled on one end to match the contour of the body - use the file for this. If using the Dremel tool with cutoff wheel, wear eye protection and remember that brass conducts heat very well (i.e. don't hold the tubing near the cut). The hacksaw won't work so well as ideally three teeth need to be in the material being

     
    cut, and that won't happen with the thin wall of the brass tube.

    2: Dress the outside edges of the brass tubes with a file, and the insides with a reamer or countersink.

    3: Cut lengths of dowel not more than half the length of the brass tubes, and press them into the end of the tubes.
    4: Holding the brass tubes with the wood end facing up, apply CA glue to wood. This will glue the wood to the brass and harden the wood fibers so they'll hold a screw better.

    5: With the pen, mark slightly more than halfway down the plastic body posts. What we're trying to do is leave enough to support the brass tube but not enough to interfere with the wood.
     
    6: With the side or flush cutters, snip the body post off at the mark.

    7: Slide the new posts over the remains of the plastic posts and test fit the body. If the posts are too tall, trim a bit more off the plastic posts. If they are too short, make a mental note not to push them all the way on when installing them.
    8: If the brass tubes are reluctant to slide over the plastic posts, try this. Take a piece of the leftover brass tubing and make a shallow cut across the end with the Dremel or hacksaw. Take the tube and rotate it in your fingers as you slowly push it over the post. It'll act as a cutter, sort of a "reverse drill bit".

    9: Once the posts are to the right length, remove them, put a drop of CA in them, and reinstall. Don't stop while pushing them on - the CA will set as soon as you stop moving. If you happen to have thicker CA, use it here.
     
    10: When the glue is dry, carefully drill the mounting holes in the center of the posts. If you mark the hole location with an awl or punch first, the drill bit won't wander. Don't go deep - you only need to get through the short length of dowel. I used a 5/64 bit. You want a bit that drills a hole just slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the screw. Too small and you'll twist the head off the screw, too large and this whole exercise will have been pointless. Test the drill on scrap first!

    11: Re-assemble car, and you're away smiling.

    If your body posts aren't badly damaged, you can probably just "sleeve" them with the brass tube.

    Hope this information has been helpful. There are surely other ways of doing this repair - I'd like to hear from anyone who's got an easier method.
