Do the rear wings which come on the cars serve any functional purpose?

    If anything the wings probably just slow the cars down with drag on the straightaways. The cars speed in the corners is not high enough to generate any useful downforce. The extra weight behind the rear wheels can also have an adverse effect on handling.

    I do have some Womps with full aerodynamic air control (sideplates and spoilers) like you see on commercial group 1/24 slotcars. This does in fact help and you can actually feel the airflow when you place your hand above the cars in the turns (actual gain is about 0.5 seconds per lap).

    To see if there is really any downforce generated by the wing try suspending a piece of tissue paper over a curved section of track. Run the cars and see if there is a notable difference between the paper movement with or without the wing attached.
