  • Picture posting for Mac users - advice, please!

Being a Mod here, with some limited knowledge of PC's and how this here website works, I'm sometimes able to assist with the posting of pictures.

This being Slot Car Illustrated, and your average picture being worth at least 999 words, any useful input any of you can provide here will be appreciated though, as I know next to nothing about Apple products and how they work.

But I'm noticing, and receiving PMs and Emails from aggravated Members about this also, that Mac/Apple users seem to be experiencing a number of issues revolving around their inability to post pictures here.

It is probably important, and relevant, to realize that both Operating Systems and Web Browsers may be part and parcel of the problem. On my PC, I use both IE & Firefox. As far as I'm aware, one or both of these may function for Apple users, as well as Safari & OX10; perhaps some others.

There are several potential ways of placing picture in a post here; the individual SCI gallery works brilliantly for any SCI Member who has contributed at least 25 posts and has followed the onscreen upload directions necessary to generate an album (it really isn't difficult) and add the content. Right click copying/Left click pasting images from many other websites is very straightforward for many. Thumbnails are pretty easy, particularly as SCI can automatically resize them if necessary. External sites such as Photobucket can work well, so long as you never delete your images from them.

But this is all from the point of view of a PC user who has been messing around with this stuff for quite a few years now, and may be of little value to a Mac user who is finding him or herself unable to present pictures here.

So please, if you are a Mac/Apple type person, who successfully posts images on SCI, let us all know here and now what method you use. Please provide your method, and your operating system, as well as clear directions for others to follow. I'll stick this Thread here at the top of FAQ, and hopefully one or more of you will be able to help out your internet cousins.

    Hi I'm a Mac

Let me see if this works then I will tell you what I did.
    cheers

Happy to help with any Mac enquiries - just send me a PM

Yep! that works - ok well I am using OS X and Safari 4 - I have uploaded my photos to photobucket and then I copied the link from photobucket.
I clicked on IMG code and then copied the link by using cmd and c key (if you use a 2-button mouse you can right click and copy the link as well)
I then pasted it into my message. tada!
Clicking on Image thumb will post thumbnails

will play a bit and post how to post using other options

    cheers

This time I used the insert image icon (the one that looks like a mountain and the sun) which appears in the menu when you click on reply (not quick reply)I then pasted in the url which I copied from photobucket using the direct link option

      cheers again

really it shouldn't be any different to how a Windows PC does it...

        Ok final option
I created an album here on SCI by following all the on screen prompts - I then uploaded some photos. I then clicked on the BB Code link and copied it and pasted it below. I did have a small hassle here I had to be careful how I selected the text in the BB Code box. A couple of times it didn't seem to copy so I was just careful in how I selected the text and then used right click to copy it.

        enough from me

I've been using a Mac since 2002, and don't have any problems posting photos on SCI. I use Photobucket to host the photos, and place the "image code" for the photo in the text of a post on SCI.

The code is prefixed by the HTML code which looks like this, without the spaces:
[ img ], and is suffixed by the code which looks like this, without the spaces: [ / img ]

You can apply that code to any photo on the internet; to find the individual image code, you place the cursor over the photo and right-click, then left click on the resulting menu, where it reads "Copy Image Location". I use a two button mouse with my Mac, but if you don't have one, hit the "crtl" key and the click panel on your touch pad simultaneously while the cursor is on the photo, and it will do the same thing. You then paste the image code into the text or post you are creating, by hitting the "apple key"" and "v" at the same time. Just remember that some sites are copy-protected, and others have extraneous code after the letters ".jpg" or ".jpeg" that must be deleted.

I don't think there is any difference between a Mac and a PC as far as posting photos goes. If you can do it on one computer, you can do it on any computer.

I use Firefox, as I like it better than the Mac supplied Safari. I also have IE on the Mac, but I forgot why I have it, and never use it. I did need it for one thing, long ago.

There is a secondary method for posting photos on SCI, which uses the "attachment" function that you find on the posting panel. To me, this method is inferior, as it will not take large (or even "normal") sized photos, but it is useful when you don't want to hot link to another site on the internet, and the photo is on your computer but not hosted anywhere on the internet. I am not aware of any specific Mac vs. PC related differences in the method.

I have only posted images on SCI using the attachment method, and have always had success.

I am running OS 10.5.8 but have done it using back to about 10.3 or so.
I am always using Safari, most recently 4.0.3

as mentioned..the attachment option can be VERY tricky to get a file sized down enough to post. real tricky (I would venture to say impossible if you don't have access to a good image editing program and understood what you were doing with image size/ pixel dimension.)

              I'm a Mac too...

... and can never copy and paste images like Wet Coast describes. I can only copy and paste addresses. Can anyone out there with a Mac copy and paste from one screen to another on SCI? Or drag and drop a photo? I find it frustrating that I have three screens and a seven button mouse and I'm limited to only copying and pasting urls.....

              Cheers!

Well I tried copying an image from another website and pasting it in here using Windows (and my Mac as well) and I can't do that. I can copy it and paste it into a document (on both computers)
I then went into the gallery chose a picture copied it and tried to paste it here with no success, but I could paste the image into 'Paint' and finally I tried to drag an image into this dialog box and it didn't work either.I am using Windows Xp with Firefox. Not sure how to make that work on a Windows PC ??

                cheers

Edit: all the attempts to paste the images appeared in this post as [img] tagged links once I clicked save - I have now removed them

Yeah, that's the kind of issue that seems to come up.

Let's suppose that I want a picture of a sheep - our NZ Members will appreciate this.

So I Google 'Sheep picture' and find that I'm offered a number of choices; this being a racing site, I right click on one of them, pop it up to size, then paste my picture of these racy sheep:

This using a reg'lar PC using Vista and IE 7, I think it is, cause the latest version is a pain in the you know what.

But it's dead simple, while many Mac users are bashing their heads against the wall just trying to upload pictures from their computers.

So, what's the problem? Why the difficulty?

Ok I think it is a browser thing - I copied and pasted this picture with IE6 but couldn't get it to work with Firefox and I am using Windows XP SP3 - must be something that IE supports and the other browser don't - I don't think I have IE for Mac any more to try it.

For Mac users I guess the easiest way is to copy the image address and use the insert image icon on the menu bar. You should be able to right click and copy the image address

I've always had to copy the image address and use the insert image icon as well. I'm using a Mac running OS X 10.6.1 and Safari 4.0.3. Actually, the thought to do it another way never entered my mind.

The image IS the URL address. Unless you are attaching a limited size image file, you cannot post a photo on SCI unless you can access it through the URL. The URL takes you to the image file, which is read by the computer, not so surprisingly, as the URL address. There is additional coding surrounding the address in HTML language as I described in my earlier post, which instructs the computer to post the image here, as it appears at its given URL. If certain browsers allow you to drag and drop, they are in effect, and evidently unbeknownst to certain users, copying and pasting the URL.

I understand that the image is displayed via a simple mark up tag which says go to this address and display the file called "abcd.jpg" - as opposed to say a word processor which places the image within the document so that it is still there even if the original is removed. However Windows IE6 and above (I couldn't make it do this in Firefox for Windows can you Wet Coast?) allow you to copy the image and then when you choose paste the image it appears in the reply window as it would if you copied and pasted into say a word document.

Drag and drop does the same thing. (As you can see from my flying sheep) If you drag an image from one website to the open reply box - IE 'pastes' the image in but when you look the source you will see there is simply a tag <img sec .....sheep.jpg etc.. just a bit more IE geewizardry which sometimes is neat and at other times a pain.

So for Mac users your best option is to simply copy the URL (as opposed to copying the image) and then use insert image and paste the URL in there. Or if you use photobucket copy the link they provide it puts all the correct markup in for you. I haven't had any problem with this working.

I simply use Photoshop to save a jpg less than 100kb in size (usually [email protected]) and upload it directly to SCI with the 'manage attachments' button when I 'go advanced' while composing a reply.

An earlier poster was right, one does need a decent image editing program to stay within SCI's file size limits.

That said, I've had no problems with this technique from a series of different Macs.
