  • HOW TO... Post YouTube videos

Posting YouTube videos in messages is very common. It's also common for people to post the video in such a way that it cannot be viewed without clicking a link to open a new window, or copying and pasting the URL or other stuff. When you want the reader to be able to view the video without any special actions other than clicking the Play button, just follow this simple guide.

    The Easy Method:

This forum has the ability to automatically insert the video into your post without you doing anything special. All you have to do is copy the link to the video, and paste it into your forum message. Do NOT put the link in the YouTube code brackets! It does have some limitations, though. For the link to resolve into a properly functioning video, two rules must be followed.

Rule #1 - The video URL (address) must NOT have an https beginning.
For example, this address will work:
    Code:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMbp1NocXe8
    and this address will not:
    Code:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMbp1NocXe8
Oh, they'll both make a box that looks like it will work, but for the second one, the video will not play. Can you spot the difference? Yep! The second one has the s after http, which stands for secure. That kind of link comes up when you're logged into YouTube when you're viewing the video. Just DELETE the s, and you're good.

Rule #2 - The video URL must be complete, not one of those short "sharing" addresses.
For example, this address will work:
    Code:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMbp1NocXe8
    And this address will not:
    Code:
    http://youtu.be/SMbp1NocXe8
Rather than copying the address from the "share" box from a video, go up to the address bar in your web browser and copy it from there. Just remember to follow Rule #1 after you paste it into your message.

If you follow those two rules when you post the video link, the forum software should be able to automatically convert your video address into an embedded video that people can watch without opening new windows or having to copy and paste stuff themselves.

    The techie/code method:
This one looks harder, but in some ways, it can be easier. Note that this should ONLY be used with the video ID code, and not with a full video URL (link).

First, get the special video ID code from your YouTube video. This is the series of random letters and numbers that come AFTER the v= and STOPS at the & that begins any junk that follows it (see above). OR it's the code after the last / in a "share" address. Just highlight and copy that part all by itself.
    Code:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMbp1NocXe8&feature=share
    http://youtu.be/SMbp1NocXe8
Once you have that video ID, all you need to do is put it in the middle of a YouTube bbcode block. There's even a handy "YouTube" logo button you can click on when you post using the full interface rather than quick reply. You can type it in from memory, or click the button, and it will put this in for you
    Code:
    [ YOUTUBE ][ /YOUTUBE ]
(I had to add the spaces so that the forum would show it)
Then, just paste your video ID code in between the brackets that end the first block and start the second one:
    Code:
    [ youtube ]SMbp1NocXe8[ /youtube ]
(again, I had to add spaces so that the forum would show the code. The actual post should not contain spaces)
With a little practice, you'll be doing this without even thinking about it.

Now, get out there and post some videos!

It was all kinda pointless, and the music ... well the music.
I did like the slalom through the cranberry bog, it'd make a good Ocean Spray commercial.

I'd like to ask people to post videos that stay on topic, and the topic should have something to do with slot cars.

Well it'll never happen, but it was worth a try.

This sub-forum is not for slot cars, specifically. It is a test/help/FAQ forum. The location of a thread does make a difference as to what is, or is not appropriate.

Also, the title is chosen by the person who posts the video to YouTube, not the person who posts a link or video in a thread.

You might want to review the forum rules. If you believe that any post violates a rule, all you have to do is click the little red triangle with the ! in it, which is at the top right corner of every message. Then, fill out the form to explain why you think the message was not appropriate. Do NOT abuse this tool, or you might find your intentions back fire. Again, review the forum rules, and don't bother reporting posts that are NOT in violation of the rules. FYI, going off topic is not against the rules. Your post, however, is walking the line on Rule #19.

Some people are like fingernails screeching down a chalk board and they don't even hear a sound. But they will defend that screech that they don't know is there. But it is entertaining to see.
