  • 2015 Racer Sideways Group 5 N. America Championships

Racer has authorized Great Traditions (aka GTSLOTS) to run a North America race program for their Sideways Group 5 series of cars. Regional races are being scheduled, culminating in a North America Final race to be held on Sunday, June 14, 2015. The Finals will take place at Great Traditions, 831 Byberry Road, Philadelphia, PA. Track opens 8am, tech inspection starts at 10am, racing scheduled to start about noon.

To qualify for the finals, you must finish in the top 4 of one of the 2015 Racer Sideways Group 5 regional races to be announced soon, or have a prior champion's exemption as a previous winner of a GTSLOTS championship final within the past 5 years.

Any shops, clubs or slot car organizations interested in holding a regional event contact Robert Holt by phone (908-397-7886) or e-mail ([email protected])

All drivers that qualify and plan on attending the “National Event” should take note that the following rules will be utilized and enforced. Modifications to these rules for “Regional Events” such as the use of different tires or other specific parts or rules are permitted with advanced notification given by the race director for the event.

    ELIGIBLE CARS:
Only Racer Sideways Group 5 brand cars are allowed. Part no. SW0014, SW0016, SW0017, SW0018, SW0019, SW0020, SW0021, SW0022, SW0023, SW0024, SW0025, SW0026, SW0027, SW0028, SW0029, SW0030, SW0031, SW0032, SW0033, SW0035, SW0037, SWLE01, SWLE02, SWLE03, GTSLOTS Limited Edition Gp. 5 Championship cars, similar white body kits, and as new cars are introduced they will be reviewed and added to the approved list if eligible. Kits must be complete with all the parts that come in the kit, excepting those changes allowed below. See picture below for eligible car examples:

    GENERAL:
Any Racer Sideways Gp. 5 or Slot.it part can be used with any exceptions noted below, see "CHASSIS" and "MOTOR" sections for examples. If the rules stated on this page do not indicate a part or tuning method IS allowed, it is NOT allowed. Any variations to these rules must be approved in advance by GTSLOTS. All rules are subject to change.

    THE BODY:
Bodies may not be modified, lightened, or cut in any way - including wheel wells, body posts, interiors, etc. EXCEPTIONS: Sharp edges and burrs may be trimmed or sanded slightly to permit clearance for the proper seating of the body onto the chassis and to allow for body float. All cars must start each race with all parts intact except for mirrors, wipers, and antennas. All cars must start with all wings and/or spoiler(s) in place as applicable if it came on the original model. Bodies and interiors can be custom painted, but all cars must have numbers and markings as is prototypical and look like race cars. Bodies must be attached by any and all screws locations provided by the factory, using Racer or Slot.it screws (w/washer under screw head as supplied with some cars is allowed) only, and shims are permitted to adjust chassis/body/spur gear/tire tweak and clearance. If body screws are run loose, tape must be placed over the screw holes in bottom of the chassis. All cars must use the complete and unmodified interior w/driver figure as supplied with the car, or the replacement Racer Sideways lexan interior FOR THE SPECIFIC MODEL CAR BEING RACED. NO Slot.it interiors are allowed. All windows must remain transparent as is prototypical.

    CHASSIS:
Racer Sideways Gp. 5 chassis only, w/Racer or Slot.it anglewinder type motor pods only (NO inline or sidewinder pods). NO TRACTION MAGNETS. Any of the Racer rear axle height adjustment parts and/or the pod front 2-point mount adapter may be used (single mount point tab must remain in place). The chassis filler pieces may be removed to fit a Slot.it pod. Slot.it magnetic and spring suspensions are allowed, with any Slot.it magnet or spring intended for their suspension. Spacers between motor pod and chassis screw locations to adjust chassis tweak are allowed. Sanding edges of motor pods, Racer rear axle height adjustment parts, and chassis for fit and float is legal. No more than .010” of material should be removed. If a standard credit card can be passed in the gap between the body and chassis, the sanding has exceeded tolerance and the car may fail inspection. NO other modifications to axle mounts front or rear are permitted. Front axle ride height adjusting set screws (upper and lower) may be used and adjusted as required. Axle shims and/or stoppers are allowed.

    AXLES\BUSHINGS\WHEELS\TIRES:
Only Racer Sideways or Slot.it axles and bushings are allowed. Racer Sideways or Slot.it (plastic, aluminum, or magnesium) (standard or short hub) wheels must be used. Front wheels – 15.8mm x 8.2mm only. Rear wheels – 17.3mm x 8.2mm or 17.3mm x 10mm (or 9.75mm) only. The correct and appropriate inserts for the Racer Sideways GP. 5 cars being raced must be used, therefore if using Slot.it wheels, you must fit the complete (ring and/or wheel spoke assembly) Racer Sideways Gp. 5 inserts into them. Wheel insert assemblies may be painted. All cars must start each race with all wheel rings and inserts in place (as appropriate for the car model being raced). All rear tires to be supplied by race host (Regional) or GTSLOTS (Regional and National) on race day unless otherwise noted.

    Approved tires are:
“Quick Slicks” tire(s) #CB32 (.799”x.360”), #CB33 (.819”x.360”), #CB34 (.835”x.360”), #CB57 (.789”x.406”), or #CB58 (.809”x.406”). Slot.it Zero grips or stock Racer tires can be used on the front. Rear tires may extend past body by no more than .5mm (.020”). No chemicals may be used on the tires. Tires are subject to change at the Nationals and due to availability some tire sizes may not be available. Regional hosts can determine tires to be used for their regional race.

    GEARING:
ONLY the Slot.it 11t 6.5mm or 6.75mm Slot.It sidewinder pinion gear is to be used on the motor. Driver may use any available Slot.It 16mm metal (GA16xx-e) or plastic (GA16xx-pl) anglewinder spur gear as required to fit the anglewinder pod used. Driver may apply grease to the gears.

    GUIDE BLADES/BRAID/ELECTRICAL:
Any Racer or Slot.it guide blade is allowed. Any manufacture braid and wire can be used and must be attached to the guide/braid through the use of Slot.it eyelets or the Slot.it M2 grub screw method and may not be glued or soldered.

    MOTOR:
    Regional Events (2 options available):

Option 1 – Handout motors provided by GTSLOTS (Slot.it yellow Flat-6 20K motor – rated 20.5k rpm @12volts) to the race host prior to the race date. Motors will be pre-tested (a report form will be supplied including motor test data), will be supplied with the shafts pre-trimmed to properly fit in all cars, pre-lubricated with pinions (Slot. It 11 tooth 6.5mm) already installed (and properly adjusted), and must be used as supplied without further modification. Racers/Tech Inspectors will be responsible for the proper soldering of the lead wires to the motor tabs without overheating the tabs and causing damage to the motor. Motors must be returned and received by GTSLOTS in good working condition no later than the Wednesday of the week following the conclusion of the race event along with the completed motor status and race results report forms. No chemicals (example: Voo Doo drops, etc.) shall be added to the motors. For the sole purpose to hold the motor in place, motors may ONLY be attached in place in the motor pod either using Slot.it motor screws w/washers through the appropriate screw holes provided in the motor (Slot.it) pod and into the pre-threaded holes in the “can” end of the motor, using the Racer pod clamping system, and/or using a single piece of tape supplied by the race host. Holes may be cut out of the tape to allow for cooling over the motor vent holes.

Option 2 – Motors to be provided by the race host or racers themselves using Slot.it 11 tooth 6.5mm or 6.75mm pinions only. It is suggested that the motors of the top 5 finishers be tested at the conclusion of the event to confirm legality with the results (if tested) provided to GTSLOTS along with the event race results. (NOTE: Contact GTSLOT technical contacts shown below for additional information on the testing of motors.)

    Nationals:
Only the provided handout (Slot.it yellow Flat-6 20K motor – rated 20.5k rpm @12volts) motor is legal for the National event and will be supplied by GTSLOTS. Motors will be pre-tested, will be supplied with the shafts pre-trimmed to properly fit in all cars, pre-lubricated with pinions (Slot. It 11 tooth 6.5mm) already installed (and properly adjusted), and must be used as supplied without further modification. Racers/Tech Inspectors will be responsible for the soldering of the lead wires to the motor tabs without overheating the tabs and causing damage to the motor. Motors must be returned to GTSLOTS at the end of the event. No chemicals (example: Voo Doo drops, etc.) shall be added to the motors. For the sole purpose to hold the motor in place, motors may ONLY be attached in place in the motor pod either using Slot.it motor screws w/washers through the appropriate screw holes provided in the motor (Slot.it) pod and into the pre-threaded holes in the “can” end of the motor, using the Racer pod clamping system, and/or using a single piece of tape supplied by GTSLOTS. Holes may be cut out of the tape to allow for cooling over the motor vent holes.

    WEIGHT:
Weight may be added to the inside of the chassis. NO weight may be attached to the underside of the chassis.

    LIGHTING (Optional):
May be added, if used must be Slot.it brand only.

    TRACK VOLTAGE:
Suggested 12 volts (Note: track power will be set at 12 volts for the N. America finals and the GTSLOTS regional races)

RACE PROCEDURES: (as to be used at the N. America finals and GTSLOTS regional events):
    - All participating race cars will be inspected to ensure rule compliance. A few test laps (the number to be determined by the race organizer) will be allowed prior to the final inspection.
    - It is the responsibility of each participant to make sure that the front spoiler, chassis, and spur gear of their car has sufficient clearance to the track and pickup rail surface so as not to rub under race conditions and will be inspected for such clearance.
    - Cars will be impounded after the inspection process and drivers cannot touch their cars unless done under “green flag” race conditions under the observation of a race official.
    - Any controller is permitted, provided that the controller does not store an electrical charge.
    - The race director for the event (the race organizer holding the event) will have the final determination if any questions or conflicts arise.
    - For any clarification of the race procedures being used at the National Championship please contact:

Robert Holt by phone (908-397-7886) or e-mail ([email protected])

Robert you can count on Clover Leaf Racing to have two regional races one on each of our track and if all goes as planned we should have a third track up and running in time also. We will also be running Quick slicks in all of our races.

                    Thanks...

I appreciate you posting the. detailed results. Looks like the Capris' are the car to beat. I am only building one car so seeing the results and times and gearing (yes I know the gt slots track is different) on this track is helpful.

The Capris run well, but the BMW's and Porsche 935/77 seem to be just as good. Regarding gearing, keep in mind that you may want to try different spur gears on the GTSLOTS track for the final.

I've not had any inquiries yet from west coast hobby shops, clubs or groups interested in running a regional race. If you know of any that may be interested, please have them contact me, preferably via e-mail: [email protected]

Strange that there's been no response, I would have thought that Alan would have been all over this, as well as the groups in Oregon and Northern California.

The issue in SoCal is no commercial 1/32 raceways and all the rest is home tracks with limited space (we don't have basements out here!)

Dennis, I tried to get one race going over here at the store track. All I hear are crickets...
