  • 2012 Scratchbuilt Chassis Proxy - Round 1

The 1st race will be held tonight on the Way2fast commercial track in Canberra.

We will probably use the 4 middle lanes depending on the number of drivers we get tonight.

I've got my good camera so should be able to take some reasonable pictures and I'll get feedback from the drivers so you know how your car is for other people to drive.

    Cheers

    Paul

Have fun, it'll great to see what the racing pecking order looks like. It makes me nervous knowing your high opinion of my mkii....

The race has been run and I have never seen so many problems with cars in one night.

One cooked it’s motor, another destroyed it’s body, another lost its braid and also had a wheel fall off and 2 cars had gears go loose in the middle of a race.

First the good news. Here are the winners, in order.

Congratulations to mmmoose1 for his 4 lap victory over the next placed car (mine). Well done Ken. He also helped biedmatt build his car so Ken technically got 1st and 3rd.

Owner................Car............. Colour (correct English spelling)...Laps........Best lap time.... Position..... Comment

mmmoose1.........Celica.............dark blue.............................. 108.......... 6.241...... 1.... Winner on the night by a clear margin and everyone said a very easy car to drive fast. With it's 21,500 Slot.it motor it was a perfect blend of power and cornering ability.
Sports Racer.......Capri...........red.................................... 104............ 6.437...... 2....... Too much power. You have to try harder to drive this car because the rear end comes out very easily under power but very quick down the straights.
biedmatt............Capri...........orange...............................103............. 6.389...... 3....... Super smooth but not quite as good as Ken's Celica through the corners. Came out if you tried to keep up with the Celica. Against any other car it had no problems.
chenglaw......... Capri.......... orange............................. 101.............. 6.550....... 4....... Another car that drew a lot of praise. Easy to drive and fun to race.
MRollingthunder..Pantera.......white................................ 99.............. 6.597....... 5....... Another smooth car that was easy to drive. When pushed hard it would slide (and loose time) but it still stayed in the slot.
RSClio............Capri..............pink................................. 99...............6.743.......equal 5th... The drivers loved this car. Easy to drive and should be much quicker down the straights but for some reason the 25k motor doesn't like to rev.
alexis in greece..Lancia........blue................................. 93............... 6.621....... 7....... The crown gear came loose and cost at least 7 laps to fix. Otherwise a good car to drive.
o3raledale......BMW 635........red...................................92............... 6.787....... 8........ Should have done much better but a wheel came off and it lost 6 or 7 laps. Hard car to drive fast because the car grips too well through the corners. Because it doesn't slide you don't know how hard to drive until it comes out of the slot and then you are shy about driving so fast in case it happens again.
Tony B........Opel..............brown............................... 88.............. 6.885........ 9........ Very hard to drive quick. Way too overmotored and twitchy and needed full concentration to get a quick lap.
Biggy..........Celica............light blue............................ 87............. 7.393........ 10........ Rough/bouncy even with the Slot.it tyres that I fitted. I think the tape I used to limit the chassis movement has gone soft as this car was much better to drive when I first put the tape on. I'll look at trying another way (permanent) to fix this problem, this is a very smooth car to drive when you only use 3/4 power.
hgpanel......BMW M1 .........orange............................. 72.............. 6.573........ 11........ Another car that should have done better. A braid fell out which took a lot of time to put back in because the body had to be taken off. Up until then it was doing well and the drivers commented that for a solid chassis it could be driven just like a normal (plastic) slot car and very quick down the straights.
manimmal.....Escort...........black............................... 70............... 6.184........ 12........ Fastest car on the night but blew up its motor. The driver who did the fastest lap said that it got faster the more you pushed it. It just refused to deslot even when it looked like it was going to crash. Let me know how you want to replace the motor. Do I post the car back to you to fix or do you want to send me another motor? Autopsy shows the pinion has moved closer to the tyre or the wheel has moved closer to the pinion and started rubbing against each other which probably overloaded the motor. It feels and sounds like it's only running on 2 of it's 3 motor segments (whatever they are called).
Mnewns......Aston...........white................................43............... 6.882......... 13........ This car destroyed itself hitting a wall. I have never seen a racer so upset about damaging someone elses car. The Aston Martin came out of it's slot and into another lane just as the driver on that lane was giving his car full power down the main straight. Unfortunatly the Aston was on a short straight and it ploughed into a fence and destroyed it's body. Prior to that it was running well but the drivers commented it took some time to get up to speed because it felt very overpowered and you have to take it gently through corners.

This won't buff out. I'll glue it back together but the resin is pretty brittle and I can't guarantee it won't break again.

Your drivers for the night. from left to right Andrew, Dave (club president), Laurie and Bob.

Some of the marshals and biedmatt's Capri on the right going so fast it's just a blur.

A very interesting night and everyone said they enjoyed it (except for the Aston moment).

            Cheers

            Paul

Gee Paul it looked like it was going to be fun but what a headache it turned out to be for you. I feel bad for the drivers after the destruction of Mikes car, I would have been heartbroken myself if it would have been me driving the car.
Matt and I were talking this morning on what are chances were since we were down on horsepower to most of the other competitors on a fairly long track. I was not expecting a win with such a large margin but I did guess Matt and I would make the top five.
                  Good luck on the repairs.
Congrats to you on your second place.

                  Ken

I'm very sorry for Mike's car.I had a body broken in 2 on my first ever proxy and know how it feels. Thanks Paul and team for the race.It is now a tradition, all my non rally cars that start in Australia to present some kind of problem on the first race:IPS2009 lead wire broken ,IPS2010 chassis broken,IPS2011 cockpit loose, now this.I have to be more carefull. All in all 7th and potentially better, iis much better than i expected from this car.Congratulations to the podiumites and Ken technology

Ken, we use the Slot.it orange endbell motor for our Slot.it class and also Le Mans where most of the quick cars are Scaleauto Toyota GT1s. My Slot.it Mclaren laps in 6.0 and I've done 5.6 with a GT1. High reving motors are not the way to go.

Your cars are very easy to race hard without desloting, especially the Celica. It makes for a lot of laps when you have 4 drivers who only get a minute to get used to your car before they have to race it.

I'm going to detune my car to make it more drivable and ask any of the other entrants if they want any changes done. I know this isn't normally done in a proxy but in real life racers would get an opportunity to change their cars before each race so I'm not really being radical. I know I keep mentioning this but I hate entering a proxy only to find my car at the bottom of the pack because I chose the wrong tyre or balanced it wrong or something else that would not take much to fix.

This is my proxy and as long as I'm running it I'm helping anyone who wants help. I won't spend hours on someone's car to make it perfect but I am willing to change things to make a car go better.

                        Cheers

                        Paul

Alexis, you should be proud of your car. It really is a great racer and has the potential to be a top 3 finisher. Very nice to drive.

I'll grind a flat spot on the axle for the grub screw to bind on if you want me to. That would stop this happening again.

No worries 1. It should stop the front tyres rubbing 2. It looks like the chassis has stood up pretty well - which was my main concern.

Well Ken called it, sort of. We both thought the cars with more displacement would win, but we would do well. They did pretty well indeed. Congrats to Ken, +4 laps is a strong finish. That wily boy from Fort Wayne again (and again and again) shows us how it is done. Congrats Paul on 2nd place and thank you and the drivers for running the race. It must have a trying day. Very sorry to see the broken car, riders can be so messy.

Note to self: resin may be fine for slower VRAA and Tasman cars, but probably not the Group 5 scratchbuild proxy.
