  • 2012 Scratchbuilt Proxy Rd 2

Well, the 2nd round of the Scratch built proxy has been run (sort of), I could only get one other driver so the only way to run it was one car at a time, I know not the ideal way to run a proxy race and I apologise for not being more organised, the main disadvantage apart from not having the racing experience was the time it took to run all the cars, all up with the few problems we had I think it took about 5 or 6 hours.
Anyway to the race, the first car we ran was Manimal’s Escort and after the first heat it was showing its class with some fast consistent laps, a few laps into the second heat the solder holding the guide holder broke so I spent most of Sunday repairing it, then early into the first heat of RSClio’s Capri the car was getting slower and slower until it just stopped with the motor just revving it’s head off, the pinion had come loose and we didn’t have any super glue or anything, a quick repair with a Scaley plastic pinion (the only one we had) and it was good to go, the only problem then was the double sided tape wouldn’t stick the body back, so we ran half the cars during the day then went home to carry out the repairs on both cars and then back in the evening for the other half.
I didn’t do a very good job of fixing Manimal’s Escort as the guide broke after two or three laps, so a major repair was carried out on the Sunday; we then ran it for the last two heats, it seemed to work ok with the car proving to be a fantastic car to drive on the big Swamp Monster track. I will include two lots of results as I’m not sure on if or how you apply any penalties for the repaired cars.
Most of the cars were just a pleasure to drive around our track, interestingly was where the cars were harder to drive, some had trouble at the end of the straight, usually lack of brakes or brains, others struggled around the esses, while coming around the last bend into the straight was a problem for a couple.
Manimal’s Escort: A perfect mix of speed, handling and grip.
Mmoose’s Celica: Pleasure to drive, stuck to the track really well, could drive hard through the corners.
Biedmatt’s Capri: Well set up car, easy to drive and you have to love the Jagermeister livery.
ChengLaw’s Capri: This car surprised me, not the best looking car or chassis (sorry Lim) but what a sweet drive, the more you drove it the better it was.
RSClio’s Capri: Just like Lim’s Capri the more you drove it the better it was, (after the pinion replacement), smooth and good grip.
Sports Racer’s Capri: Another Capri that drove well on this track, I think if the front wheel touched the track it would have been faster, when driving hard through the corners it tended to lift the inside rear wheel and you felt like you were going to tip it over.
Alexis’s Lancia Beta: Another car that went much better racing than qualifying, as you can tell by the results it was not far behind the Capri’s.
O3Raledale’s BMW: The 25 car had good speed around the track but the tyres seemed a bit hard and it was a bit bouncy in places.
MRolling Thunder’s Pantera: Went really well and so quiet and smooth except for being a bit of a handful through the esses for some reason.
My BMW: Very fast down the straight, no brakes, way too heavy, slow pick up but smooth to drive, (what sort of tyres are they Mark?)
Mike Newn’s Aston Chassis with my BMW 320 body: This car love to rev, heaps of speed down the straight, lack of brakes, light chassis and probably the way I attached the body made it a handful to drive, Might of needed a bit more weight as it wanted to tip over on every corner.
Biggy’s Celica: This car had good pace but you couldn’t put the power down as it wanted to bounce and deslot, tyres too hard?
TonyB’s Opel: Just had no pace for this track, motor just doesn’t want to rev.

I will post some pics up tomorrow.

I'm not sure what to do about Manimmal's and RSClio's cars. I know technicaly these cars failed but they were fixed and then went on to post good results.

Time for a vote from everyone. Do we use the first results with both cars doing well or do we account for the faults with the cars and move them to the bottom of the race ?

        Cheers

        Paul

PS. Shane, I put Slot.it F22's on your car.

My vote is to keep the first results as although Manimal's and RSClio's cars in this proxy had to be repaired, this is something which could have happened in a race where the entrant/driver is present and the cars would have been repaired anyway. Secondly, I don't enjoy getting onto the podium purely on a technicality and Manimal's Escort has proven to be faster than my Capri, so doesn't make sense for me to be in front of him.

            Ok Thanks Paul

And thanks for tidying up the results.

I would be happy for the first lot of results to count, especially the way I ran this round.

By the way, for the next round I have to carry out some repairs on my track, so if I can fix it this weekend I hope to run Round 3 on the weekend of the 1st of Sept.

            Cheers

            Shane

I know it may be an American thing but I was always told; that to finish first first you have to finish. I do not see how it is fair to re run a heat/lane that the car broke down in, but that is just my humble opinion.

I do not wish to be a hard nose but I have to agree with Ken. This race was uniquely run since there was one driver. Normally you have a few drivers and a broken car causes all to wait. Typically if the car can be fixed quickly it is, but what it completed for that heat it broke is all the laps earned.

Ditto on that...I don't believe I've ever seen a race in scale or 1:1 where the racing stopped so a competitor could fix a car...Can you imagine how long a typical NASCAR or Australia V8 Supercar race would be!

Thanks for hosting! It looks like all the cars were close!

Round 3 of the Group 5 Scratch Built Proxy at the BEAST DOME

Round 3 of the Group 5 scratch built proxy has been run at the BEAST DOME with Mmoose’s Celica coming out on top from biedmatt’s and RSClio’s Capri’s. I ran qualifying Saturday morning and then we raced in the afternoon, qualifying and the early heats proved to be a challenge with the track not offering much grip.

The top three qualifiers were biedmatt (Capri #1) 1st – Mmoose (Celica #56) 2nd and Manimal (Escort #2) 3rd.

With enough members to run the proxy as per normal the early racing was interesting with the faster cars difficult to come to grips with on the slippery track.

1st – Mmoose - Celica #56 – The guys loved driving this car, even with the slippery track the grip was pretty good, just the right amount of power for this track too.

2nd – biedmatt - Capri #1 – Similar to Mmoose’s Celica, lovely to drive, great smooth handling car.

3rd – RSClio – Capri #66 – Probably the best handing car suited to this track, just a bit more punch needed.

4th – Manimal – Escort #2 – The drivers loved this car, but it was a little bit difficult to drive on this track with a combination of lack of grip and super quick motor, it started making strange noises at the end of its heats, turned out to be the rear window that had come loose, I have just made temporary repairs with some blue tack.

5th – Alexis – Lancia Beta #51 – Another car suited to this track, drove really well except for some shuddering in the corners for some reason.

6th – o3raledale – BMW 320 #25 – Drove well, smooth car, a bit more power needed maybe, driven hard it wanted to tip over.

7th – Sports Racer – Capri #3 – Once again lack of grip restricted this car’s performance.

8th – Rolling Thunder – DeTomaso Pantera #13 – As usual smooth and quiet, very nice to drive, needs more pace to be up with the big boys.

9th – TonyB – Opel - #23 – With a couple problems and cars being difficult to drive this car ended up higher on the finishing list that I thought it would, it needs heaps more power but it was easy to drive around the BEAST DOME and very rarely left the track.

10th – Biggy – Celica #55 – This car had good pace but there is something strange with the tyres, they seem too hard but on inspection they feel ok, driven hard through the corners they just bounce really bad and throw the car around everywhere, they look they might be expanding on the rim as there is groove worn into the inside of one of the tyres.

11th – MikeNewns – BMW #15 – Very hard to drive this car on this track, combination of light chassis, powerful motor and my poor adaptation of my body on Mike’s chassis made it very difficult to drive with any sort of pace.

12th – Chenglaw – Capri #5 – This car started well, but after we had a few offs the problems started, The body has broken near the door and rear guard on one side and through the top of the wheel arch on the other and that caused the interior to foul on the gears, after some temporary repairs with some blue tack we could at least finish the race, there a groove being cut into one of the tyres, I think it is rubbing on the interior.

13th – HGPanel – BMW M1 #61 – We had braid problems with this car and by the time I had repaired it properly it had lost quite a few laps.

Thanks to driver’s Rusty, Kaycee and Wiz and marshals’ Justin, Boomer and Max.

I will add the photos in the next couple of days.

Thanks to all for letting us run these rounds of this proxy, it has been great to see how each car has been constructed and how they perform, apologies for being a bit slack in organising these rounds but eventually we got there.

Well, I think that's the end of the road for my Capri. I don't have a spare shell to replace it at this point in time, so I feel it's best that the car is returned to me now rather than for it to stagger through the remaining rounds. HG, can you please PM me when you're ready to post the car back to me and I'll let you have my postal address.

                            Pantera needs more speed...suggestions?

Any ideas what could be done for the Pantera to give it a bit more top end? Maybe dropping the number of teeth on the pinion of larger diameter rear tires?
