  • U13 2015 - Round 7 - Targa Burnaby - Results are in!

Cars arrived safe and sound. Just a little lubing and scuffing of tires required.

    U class (11)

    Ux class (12)

What a cool collection of little cars. Well done everyone.

Qualifying this afternoon at Luf's track for the beginning of the last leg.

Thanks to Art at Dart Hobbies for moving the cars on promptly. Well packed, too. I suspect either Bob B (Doubl-B) or Bob M (mether05) constructed the sturdy shipping box.

Qualified the cars this late afternoon on Luf's challenging Targa Burnaby, with elevation changes and flow like no other over an average 85 foot lane length.

Each driver station has its own variable power supply and the qualifying middle lane was set at 10 volts.

    The qualifying results are:

    U class (11)
    1. 45 Alfa Guilietta, red 9.553 - stuck down with good acceleration
    2. 177 Austin Mini, red 9.663 - fast and handles corners surprisingly
    3. 15 Honda 800, red 9.676 - smooth and fast
    4. 36 Toyota S800, yellow 9.789 - another smoothie
    5. 72 Bugeye Sprite, blue 9.986 - smooth but couldn't handle some tight corners
    6. 13 Triumph Spitfire, white 10.133 - loose but handled twisties well
    7. 7 Trabant , yellow 10.203 - smooth but low on power
    8. 2 Austin Mini, blue 10.23 - 8th - low on power, handles well
    9. 5 Austin Mini, red 10.245 - low on power, easy to drive
    10. 95 Fiat 850, white 10.817 - no tire grip
    11. 23 Fiat Abarth, silver 11.571 - just slides as there's just no rear tire grip

    Ux class (12)
    1. 44 Alfa Guilietta, red 8.161 - good power and great handling
    2. 79 Lotus Elite, red 8.198 - fast and stuck down
    3. 8 Austin Mini, green 8.461 - very driveable with good speed
    4. 11 Trabant, black 8.498 4th - smooth but less power than others on big uphill sweep
    5. 72 Bugeye Sprite, blue 8.611 - smooth and driveable
    6. 22 Austin Mini, yellow 8.671 - good runner but chatters on corners
    7. 5 Honda 360, blue 8.787 - speed demon, hard to handle
    8. 63 Bugeye Sprite, graffitti 8.807 - shallow guide led to understeering offs in some corners
    9. 31 Lotus 7, red 8.952 - smooth
    10. 33 Hillman Imp, silver 8.96 - planted but down on power
    11. 4 Fiat 850, red 9.558 - rear too loose because of no traction rear tires
    12. 162 NSU TT, yellow 9.731 - low on power, too much brake, tippy in corners

Congratulations to all. It was an absolute driving pleasure regardless of speed.

The subsequent race happens this Sunday afternoon.

    Stay tuned.

      Dan,

Nice track and quick race scheduling continues! Thanks for the photos too!

Those Canadians took most of the top spots, but Methe and Brain are close in the U class! Not close enough to stop their grumbling though...

We NERFers are racing this morning and Methe and Brain are nursing their bruised egos as the race their NASCAR class (I'm just happy to out qualify Brain in UX!). Between their grumbling, I heard them mumble through gritted teeth "Just wait till the race..." By the sounds of plastic collisions behind me, they are taking their qualifying frustrations out on the track!

Thanks to our drivers, Murray, Daniel (dansula) and Luf (oldslotracer) and time manager Don (tf1250) for their time and effort. Especially to Luf for, unhesitatingly, allowing us to use his tracks.

        On to the next venue.

            Good day to all
You guys really keep this rolling along at a great pace.
Congratulations to all of the podium finishers on this great track.
A quick question for my own knowledge ... On car 177 which qualified second in class did not perform well in the race. Was that due in part to being top heavy under racing conditions or different driving characteristics from the others and taking time for each of the drivers to understand its unique character.
            Thanks again to all.
            Aloha

              Dan,

Thanks for the great photos and prompt report! East Coast rules in U, whole Wet Coast shuts out in UX, dramatic stuff.

At least I won't have to listen to my team mates caterwauling about their results, a NERF 1-2 in U somehow my #22 found its way into 5th in UX (and first non-Canadian too ), they must have spilled some glue on the track....

Congrats to Dan in UX - first overall win this season I think!

                Aloha,

I'll begin by saying how amazing your 177 Mini is considering that it's basically a stock Scalextric. It's quite fast and handles the corners better than I would have thought. As a result that confidence during the three minute heats in each lane betrayed the car as drivers pushed harder and suddenly the top heaviness would produce offs. Luf's Targa Burnaby is a particularly tricky track for saloons with its big elevation changes and off camber corners, so don't feel too bad.

Good tuning on this rtr car.
