Question

Hmmm I'm tempted to ask for a definition of 'scratchbuilt'. Does an HRS/2 count? And what about the BMW 3.5 CSL? I have 1 that could become 111 with the application of a couple of decals.

Thanks Paul for enticing me into another proxy. Any photos of the tracks involved?

I think you would need some moulds and an injection moulding machine in your workshop!

Here's what I've got so far.

Beachside Model Raceway - Southern area of Adelaide
26.75 metres around the shortest lane 27.05 around the longest lane (4 lanes)
2 x 40 amp power supplies - Adjustable power level can be set from 2 volts to 17 volts
Races usually run at 12 volts -
4 lanes MDF timber routed track - Copper braid
100mm lane spacing minimum
150mm spacing on the sweeper at the end of the main straight
Plenty of run off area to keep deslotted cars out of harms way until the marshal does his job.
Dead strip timing to SRM 2.30 program
Enoch grey Ferrodore
Its a fast open layout that suits the faster cars
From the start line
The main straight is 7.5 inside lane - 8.2 metres outside lane then a long 4.6m (outside lane) right hand turn through a wide sweeper (the lane spacing splays out into 150mm so over taking can be done easily while all the cars are sliding) , then as it exits onto the back straight the track sweeps back left into a 1.8m "s" reversing the slide from the right hand sweeper into the left hand uphill climb ,into a 4.5 metres straight then it has to brake hard into a 180 corner , next a short 1.2m straight into a right / left slide under brakes around another 180 corner then 2m straight leading to the bridge underpass . Then through a 30 degree kink under the bridge.out the another side turning left into a 2 metre ( inside lane ) 3.5m (outside lane )sweeping corner that tightens up at the end to go left over the bridge then a right turn with a slight off camber feel to it as it enters the main straight and over the finish line.
The motor spends a lot of time in its higher rpm limit using the usual 3:1 ratio 9:27 gearing (inline) or 3.8:1 10:38 sidewinder type gearing . The track has a few sweeping corners that require the car to stay in a constant slide and remain stable .
The braid sits 1/2mm below the track surface.
Forgot .. track slot ( 8mm deep 1/8th wide )

As for controllers , everyone that races at my place has gone fully adjustable brakes , ohms and voltage

tyres ... I always run MJK but some have run slot it F15s - F22s and had better lap times - the local club still debates whether those " F " tyres were treated before the racing started

Lap times ... lotsa lap times have been posted about my track on auslot that cover a lot of different car types both 1/32 and 1/24th a good place to start is my round of the 2008 proxy cars , there is a good run down of what worked on my track and what didnt regarding the proxy entries that year and a video that should still play

lap length - 15m
slot depth - 7.5mm
OK for wood guide? Yes, No problems with ninco pro guide. But I do have a problem with the thickness of carrera. I will work on that over xmas
braid or tape - braid
in the case of braid what the recess is (flush with the surface or below) - flush
surface paint - Raw ferrodor
what power supplies and controllers are being used - Slot.it controller
best tyre brand(s) that suit the track - Best would be Slot.it F series or NSR (but i doubt these would last the whole series) Slot.it P6 & MJK run good as well and would be my pick.
lap time for quick cars - from 5.5s

Canberra Way2fast

8 lane commercial track
Track surface - Ferrodor
Power supply - 40 amps
Controllers - Professor motor
Best tyres - Slot.it F22 but these go off after 5 minutes racing. Recommended Slot.it F30, MJK or NSR Ultra. Ninco also work.

Melbourne Model Raceway
length approx 18m
wood guide ok
braid - flush
ferrador surface
power source, not sure but easily adequate
controllers 45ohm turbo supplied, but drivers own throttles will be used
outright lap record @14v 2.9, nsr mosler. More likely the quick proxy cars will be doing 3.5 @12v
Silicons are banned, and although rubber tyres such as brm or slot.it raptors provide the most grip, it tends to be a majority rules kind of track, ie if it's mostly urethane, the brm's etc just don't work.

Newso's track

Track is flat enamel painted surface, braided, each lap is 16.5 metres and timing system is Trackmate.

Furthering Paul's question... Can a slot.it pod be used in said scratchbuilt chassis? Can SCC axle blocks be used?

I'm thinking these rules mean no complete HRS2's allowed, but you can use SCC set-screw front axle blocks, and any commercially sold form of rear axle-to-motor bracket. Since the Slot.It pod is more than a rear-axle-to-motor bracket, I'm guessing it is not allowed.

Yes Robert that was the intention when I drafted the rules some time ago. We wanted to try and get some old fashion scratch building going on!

So no screw in race type pods from any manufacturer? Just to be clear...

Correct.

The only parts you can use that can be commercially made are the guide tongue, axle pillow-blocks and rear axle brackets (not motor brackets such as HRS). You can't even use a modified Womp or 1960's Monogram chassis.

This is how we used to make chassis 40 years ago.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Cheers

Paul

What about an integrated guide tongue/pillow block mount like this?

I was just looking around at some bodies and is there any max width rule as long as the body covers the tires? I found a BMW body that is 70 mm wide.

Looking forward to giving this a shot. Ken
