Default Looking for track lighting ideas

I'm looking for ideas on how to light my 12x6 2-lane track (Palm Coast Raceway).

Not just about what LEDs to use - there is a good write up on that. At this point, I'm looking for ideas on light fixtures. I don't want something that merely lights the track, I want them to look like a racetrack lighting system (so they add to the scenery as well. I'm open to lights on poles. or the "musco" type lighting that big tracks are using these days.

I'd love to see what others have used.

Around Christmas time at Michael's stores you can get stadium lights they are LED and come in sets of 3 with a power pack. They are usually sold with their Christmas display items You might be able to get them year round on their website, I've never looked. Each tower has 5 lights that can be independently swiveled around to face different directions.

The majority of road courses only have lights in the pit areas, ovals are lit all the way around. If you need a lot of lights store bought ones are going to add up to a lot of money and in any case you would have to buy a few to see how they actually perform. I built my own lights, those were intended to look like the type that were used around oval tracks in the '60s, so I used panel mount LEDs with finish washers as reflectors. Modern track lights are rectangular, sometimes two of those are mounted on the same pole. Surface mount LEDs are available, those can be square or rectangular and have a wide 120 degree viewing angle. The LEDs that I found are only 2.8 X 3.5mm, but they put out 8000 mcd. They are also dirt cheap at 29 cents each. I am not certain how much coverage these would give you. The LEDs that I used have a much narrower 45 degree viewing angle, so the light distribution is not great, but I can aim the lights to a degree. My lights are 18 inches apart with two 8000 mcd LEDs per pole. My track is HO scale, for a 1/32nd track you would want poles that are further apart, I think that if you had four LEDs per pole you could have the poles 2.5 to 3 feet apart. I did build a 1/32nd scale light with 4 panel mount 8000 mcd LEDs. One problem with surface mount LEDs is that they do not have leads, soldering wires to them would be a delicate operation, possibly sockets are available, but that would add to the cost. If you use four LEDs wired in series you can power them up using a cheap 12 volt battery charger.
I am tempted to get some surface mount LEDs to experiment with.

OK, I could not help myself, I ordered 50 8000 mcd natural white surface mount LEDs from Super Bright LEDs. The cost was $17.35 shipped.

Check out some of the model train suppliers on EBay. The poles may need extending.I found some suitable pit lighting. Sorry cannot find the link now.

I have raced on Richard's oval under the lights -- most cool! There is almost a stroboscopic effect as your car goes under the lights. Makes for a unique racing experience.

Richard knows his stuff. Pay attention!

The lighting for my track is not perfectly uniform, so there is a stroboscopic effect as the cars go around. I added some blue LEDs on the ceiling to smooth that out a little, in any case once you are actually racing you tend to ignore the effect. I plan on experimenting with the surface mount LEDs and I will update the article that I wrote about making your own lights based on the results.
