I knew the car had some potential and it shows on this track. Wow what a great lap time. The car was modeled after the 61 NZ GP entry of Mr. Hill and took home third place in that race. I hope my version lives up to it's qualifying times. . . .
I like the track and a great job getting the qualifying times in the books. Ken
I loved your car. I thought it was the best build by far - so it was cool to see it eat up the track.
Munter, who has forgotten more about scratchbuilt cars than I will ever know, thought it was just superb. So good skills mate. I hope you do well on Sunday.
For your info, a good time on my track with a blueprinted but essentially 'standard' RTR car like a Slot It is say 7.0s to 7.3s(ish). Very few 'standard' cars break into the 6 sec bracket. The outright track record for a highly modified RTR car is about 6.15s.

Thank you Mac for the compliments on my entry. I was planning a simple car and that always seems to turn into oh just a bit more detail here and a little more detail there and I get way too involved in the finish. I try to lead by example in not just having a slot car race but a slot car show. The VRAA cars have evolved greatly into some fine scale model cars that can race and that was the intent when I took over the series.
Thank you for the track info, I was doing some math with the results of what the cars times were on your track to Matt's Monza track that is 5 foot longer and I found your track to be deceivingly fast in comparison. I have race HO cars on shiny surfaces and was impressed with the grip and with the lap times you have shown the grip must be fantastic on your track.
It's race day. The inaugural New Zealand round of the Tasman Cup is underway at 1pm on Thunder Road.
Under the watchful eye of legendary New Zealand slot car guru and terminally dyslexic Proxy adminstrator 'Munter', 4 of our small nations most awarded slot car drivers will be racing your bespoke cars as though we'd built them ourselves. Expect the lap times to be fast and the de-slots to be few. And expect Munter to do the haka if that's not the case.
Racing conditions are ideal. Thunder Road has been groomed to perfection. Our team of Marshalls are all visualising lightening quick re-slots. It's all go go go.
I would like to thank Mac for hosting, Craig, Craig and Chris for driving, J2theK for car prep and Viv for marshalling.
We worked well together and demonstrated some mahi tahi.....I didnt have to do the haka but I have been practicing.
Well done and thanks to Mac and munter and all of your helpers !! Hope you had a great day racing these little beasts. It'd be great to see more Kiwis' building and racing this class in future proxies!
Definitely Kens round, well done Ken, congratulations !
Great to see Phil and Stig up there too and keeping up the Aussie presence at the front ! Im a very happy chappy with !
Will work out the 3rd and 4th and 5th and 6ths positions when Stubbo gets the spreadsheet back, by then he will be back in internet range and able to get the standings sorted and posted.
Well done to all the entrants. Akers' car just keeps on going.
Any clues as to Stubbos' run, I was surprised to see him that far down after qualifying 2nd ? I did expect Matt to come up the order more too.
Very pleased NZ put their hand up to host a round for this proxy, thanks guys ! Now that you've seen and had a play with them hopefully your cars will be faster next time round !
Congrats to Ken with the win, nearly three laps up on second place. Doesn't Ken know you only drive fast enough to beat the others?
Congrats to the other podium finishers and thank you to the host and drivers. Losing 12 points to Slo1 hurts, but I was in that position midway through the VRAA and there's lots of racing left. The red devil isn't conceding yet.
WOW the number 8 had it's day in the sun! Congrats to the other three guys on the podium and a hearty well done to the lads who ran the race. . .
Munter you did a great job as a noob. When we run the cars in a proxy race like this we mark the cars finishing position with a sticker that has the car number on it. it makes determining the outcome of ties in scoring much easier. We had a race on a 190 foot track early in the VRAA where we had three cars finish withing a foot.
I am glad to see that you had some good fun with the cars and Mike Aker's old car finish so well.
Though my expectations were not high, a 13th place finish is disappointing. One bad heat may have cost me a couple of positions, but the #7 obviously isn't more than a mid-field car at best. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board and try something different for next year's VRAA & Tasman entries.
Congrats to the moose-man on a dominating win. Nobody puts more time and thought into building these little cars (and then sharing that knowledge) than Ken does.
Many thanks to Mac and his crew for putting on the show.
I was aware that some cars were not as high in the finishing order and others had pushed further up the scale. For some reason certain cars suited our drivers and the lap data shows this.
I thought Matts car was great but I did marshal it a few times, likewise with Stubbos car.
Phil Kalbfells car had a binding front wheel but still did well, better than I anticipated.
Old 23's car was beautiful and fast but had some offs which hurt.
The two sets of double equal laps was another weird phenomena. It must be the air down here.
A number of the faster cars had deslot issues. Gloss tracks offer amazing grip levels but this didn't seem to suit all of the faster cars. For example when I drove Stubbo's wee monster in red lane, it was half a lap up after 2-3 laps but suffered a few annoying deslots during my drive.
There were cars down the field that had stability and drivability but not the pace. Others were fast but unstable. You all know the drill.
In the end a mixture of stability, drivability and pace won the day - as it should in a Proxy. Ken's car ticked all those boxes. It was good to see it take out this round. I think all the drivers thought it deserved the win.
Thanks again for the opportunity to put your cars on my track. As I said before, it was a great afternoon in the Man Cave.
