I don't really like SQ's, I think all slot cars should be run, but I can't. I just received a beautiful SUNOCO Lola T-70, and I can't run it. It will be my ONLY SQ.
Some slotcars, i get 2, one to modify-race,.. AND, a 1/18 diecast for checking the detailed painting!! i.e. Vic Elford Porsche 917K Martini #3 at Sebring 1971..etc. Now, let's not bash the SQ /nor Racer.! we've all got our preferences and affordability~ right? My preference for SQ, are Ostorero early Indycars~ They cover the transition of front-motor to rear-motor cars. Hand-crafted in Italy, by a father/son team. another nice selection, are the Pink-Kar VWs or Ninco Porsche 356... or, Scalextric Caterham/Lotus7 's....
Most every slot car I have purchased was done so with the intention to at least drive, if not race. But a very few have either been so pretty they only get driven a very few laps or so awfull I lost interest in even trying to get them to turn a decent lap. But basically I agree with mikeinclover, slot cars are supposed to be driven.
While there has been much spirited discussion about those who buy and do not run as opposed to those who do, one thing is overlooked.
Were not modern Europlastic slot cars so well detailed, then the desire to collect and simply display them would not be happening.
It has been mentioned by others that a goodly proportion of those cars sold go to the shelf queen crowd. These sales allow new cars to be produced and we are all better for it.
I know mikeinclover has shelf queens - he just doesn't have them on a shelf. He has rafter queens!!!! When I raced magnets my cars would get so beat up so if there was a particular car I liked I bought two.
I have a couple of Racers RTR and a couple of hand built jobs from other guys I've collected that I 'drive' around once in awhile. It's hard for me not to want to try out every car I add to my collection. I do have a couple that have been stored out-of-sight; out-of-sight is out-of-mind.
I have found that the more I race the better I am at avoiding a crash. At the same time my modeling ability keeps improving so I am getting better at repairing damages caused by racing. This makes it easier to race some of those beauties.
Any car sitting on my shelf is fair game - they are not an investment with which I expect to fund my retirement. They are like tools - to be used, but used with respect. I also respect anyone's desire to keep a car MIB.

I'm guilty with that one also :
mine only came out of the box for the picture then I put it away
Wicked, you know that 95% of those are empty boxes. I must say I do have a few that have not been raced "yet". The only cars I find worthy of SQ status are Slot it Group C. I have a few others that I bought when we were racing them but then we did not run that class any more so they never left the base. I really should broom them off soon.
