Default Reasons for Switching or Giving up Digital altogether

MR. Flippant,

Good idea, thank for updating the old poll. I think this could really help the manufacturers.

Got an idea, and maybe this will help the digital companies in improving their systems.
I initially started with SSD , and loved it. I now race analog HO, and love it also. I still have my SSD , and plan on keeping it. One day I hope to have the space to set both up. But since I have too choose between one, I've chose analog. Here are my reasons for switching in order of significance:

1. Technical problems/failures with SSDC - ruining race nights.
2. Significant damage to cars resulting from crashes - simple fix: race more SR cars, not a big problem.
3. Cost factors - a bit pricey; not a definate determining factor though, but feel there is a big price hike between ssd analog and digital, especially the power paks, and digital chips, as compared with other brands.
4. Space constraints

What it would take me to switch back to SSD :

Improving the reliability of the SSD system - correcting glitches. In my opinion, the quality of the equipment has a lot of room for improvement. Cost would not hinder my decision if the equipment was reliable, and longer-lasting.

Obervations:

1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the las poll, I think SSD was the top choice.
2. There is a substantial spread between SSD and Carrera, this was very surprising to me. Maybe this will close a bit as the poll progresses. If the spread continues, this could be an indication that there is room for more competition.
2. I've noticed on his forum that there are many posts regarding problems with SSD , and significantly less with Carrera's digital system.

Not to talk down either brand, but I may have started with Carrera if I was aware of all the problems with SSD , but at the time I went with SSD , the 7042 was not on the market yet, but who knows, now looking hind sight.

Thanks again for updating the poll.

All systems have issues. Analog included.

Carrera has a very active contingent on this bulletin board. In fact, that's the only information of substantive value that can be taken from this poll.

Agree with that statement.

I don't know how you create an actual effective poll on the status of the industry with a site specific effort but clearly Carrera is the popular choice with SCI readers. I imagine some of that must be in part due to Dave K. and his diligence in supporting his company via regular site visits. I also know that SCX owners are quite enamored with the service they receive from SCX Bryan via the SCX site. I have no idea what the others do.

One thing I will say about SCX is that there haven't been any new products OR any new issues in years. If nothing else it allows for a certain comfort that I do enjoy. The hobby should be about having fun rather than problem solving your system.

So which ever system you have, if it works for you then that's what really matters.

If not, mista Kennedy will be happy to take your call. Tell him I sent you.

Thank you for the nice comments.

Yes, it is a Carrera digital setup. You can go to my gallery and will find more pictures. Sooner I will update the album with all the "scenery" I am adding.

The fences are "Ninco Fences" I bought one year ago from HOTSLOT132. They are screwed to the track side.

Cheers
Daniel

Yeah, the poll only shows brand use on SCI. The old poll was so old that it was not even indicative of that. At least this one will be accurate for this year. That's why I have it set to close at the end of the year. Maybe I'll start a new one for 2013.

Carrera does have a lot going for it, but as Bruce said, all systems have issues to deal with, even analog.

As for digital cost, SSD has the cheapest chips, even compared to Carrera. For whatever reason, though, Carrera Digital cars are only $10-15 more than an analog one. Go figure.

The poll only shows the brand use by the SCI members who have seen fit to vote.
At the time of writing 118 have voted (maybe a few more by the time you read this). That's a very small sample of the world's slot racing market and quite a small sample of SCI members.

The results are interesting, but you need to be cautious about reading too much into them. As anybody who understands polling will know, a small self selecting sample can be somewhat unrepresentative.

At first I hesitated to vote but when I saw the choice at the bottom I decided to participate. I really doubt that I will ever switch to digital. I like the idea of two, four, six or eight independent lanes. I have tried driving on a couple digital systems that were set up in hobby shops and I wasn't impressed. But that is just me as I know many have found the system to their liking.

I'm glad you put the poll up, and I think it does show us something. When I first came here 4-5 years ago, there was very little information available here on D1XX. That 'other' website was the place to go for Carrera digital knowledge. Dave K's creation of a Carrera sub-forum, and his tireless presence here, have made this the go to place for Carrera information.

So now there are quite a few active SCI members who run D1XX. A similar poll on that 'other' site would be lopsided in favor of SSD . Probably far more lopsided than this is for Carrera. Although oXigen and Scorpius would fare better there, as well.

Carrera Digital 132 here.

Yeah, I know I am scxfan. I had SCX Digital a while back and enjoyed it while I had it pretty much.

Carrera has made quite a few changes and some of those changes did not go over rel well with some users as it required a good bit of upgrading.

That said, I think Carrera has the most complete system at this time. Its what prompted my change.

Rumors of maybe SCX finally making a change. Would like to see it. THey really need an upgrade with more features. I do like their PitBox, lap counter and chronometer.

Scalextric has certainly gotten better with their newer Powerbase. Never thought much of Ninco as far as digital goes but they do have great analog stuff.

Interesting Thread.

I have a Carrera D143 track with D132 accessories (CU + DLC + DSC + Refueling). 56' of track on a 4x8 plywood sheet with retractables table legs.

Everything is still working very good. We are still playing a lot since last Christmas (with many of my son friends). Carrera F1 with D143 chip and 12V 22K rpm engine are terrific. SCX DTM with D132 chip and 12V engine are pretty good too (for a bit of drifting...). My 4,5 y/o son still prefers non-desloting cars (14,8V engine + strong magnet). He's too young right now for refueling.

Got pretty nice service from Brenda (Carrera) for defect chip last spring. Thanks again.

I race exclusively on SCX Digital. I own nearly one hundred cars, all of which were made by SCX or were modded to run on SCX Digital.

I may prefer SCX Digital, but I am a member of the Dave Kennedy fan club.

Ahab out . . .
