Are you doing a 1/4 mile track?
at 1/43 scale that would be 30.69 feet long + another 3-5 feet of track to stop the cars safely

As to your problem maybe it's your battery , you may have enough voltage but not enough amps specially if you are using small battery's like 9v or AA , etc...
Try to plug in a power supply on to the track & see if it's run's good?

Now i don't know how long is your track but keep in mind you'll need a few feet of track to stop the cars & making sure that the stopping/breaking track are not powered & have shorted rails it will stop the cars faster

well its more like a test track? only 10 feet... its artin brand!, but i think ur right about the batt. power, its just a old 4 d pack! maybe i will strech it out and buy some more scx or carrera and go with a wall power pack.still do i need to complete the curcuit, or should it just run the cars just open ended?
thanks guys

Yeah! must be the battery's specially if they are old & been used before go buy some new alkaline battery's something good like Duracell or Energizer but 4xD battery's will only be good for Artin/Fastlane cars as the battery's voltage will be 6 volt (4x 1.5v)

No you don't need a close (complete) circuit for the track/cars to function but you may need to add a few power taps if it's long enough but at 10 feet long you'll be fine without it

Buy a real bettery...
Even a motorcycle battery with a charger will power most any pair of small cars for the whole track length.
You can get a small (smaller than a car) home tractor battery for 35 or 40 bucks...

No matter what you do with small "flashlight" betteries, they won't be enough amps, unless you connect 25 or 30 together...

i had a temporary drag strip in the basement - app. 24ft, artin track, no power taps, using the artin wall warts - worked like a charm.

Cash, are you using the batt pack because there is no mains power where the track is? If you have access to mains power you could wire in an unused wall pack transformer from some other electrical device. Old laptop power supplies are quite easy to come by and often deliver at least a few amps. One catch might be that they are often around the 18 volt mark. "Second Hand" shops often have boxes full of transformers costing next to nothing and you'd be sure to find something suitable there.

Cheers,
Michael.
