Default NSR Motor...

I'm really stumped....

I chiped a car (non-mag) with an N-Digital chip running a NSR Shark 25K motor and at first all was well....

I ran 5 segments of 50 laps each while tuning the car and during the last segment it just stopped.

I thought I might have got across the rails with my multimeter but now I think not as I rechipped the car with a chip I "stole" from a car I'm not using (I first tested this car on the track and all is OK !) so I removed it and put it in the car I'm trying to setup and YUP it to willn't run. I carefully checked for volts @ the point where the wires from the braids enter the chip and got 12.38 and then I check where the wires come out of the chip ( to the motor ) and got ZERO volts so again this chip is fryed......I can't keep doing that so HELP !!!

I posted a question over on the Ninco thread about the NSR Shark 25 K motor, but I ask here as I think I'll get more eyes...here so....
Also is there someone here @ SCI that knows someone who can "repair" these chips !!!

Hey guys thanks for taking a look.

Dick

Hi Dick,

Although I am a SSD guy and cannot speak for anything Ninco Digital, I am considering chipping some NSR shark 20 cars.

Having burnt a chip on a hot motor, I decided to do a simple stall current test of the different motors I have:
* All the stock scaley, carrera and fly (black stripe) motors have a stall current between 1.1A and 1.3A (these never burnt a chip)
* My NC-5 and NC-7 motors are around 1.5A-1.7A (these have never burnt a chip)
* The NSR shark 20, Slot.it orange bell, MRRC red can and Fly racing motor all have a stall current around 2.2A (the Fly racing motor has burnt a chip)

I am sure your Shark 22 is in the 2.2A range.

NOTE: My tests were done @ 11v and my cars are run without magnets.

So while I cannot help with repairing a Ninco chip, hopefully this info might help people avoid more burnt chips.

Mike

Not that this is any help for the original user, either- but there could be Carrera digital users reading this thread, so I can say I've never burnt a Carrera D1XX chip with too much motor. I've run many, many orange end bell, one slot.it yellow end bell (similar to the mentioned Shark 25K), one NSR King 21.5, and a couple Rush 36K motors. All non-magnet except for a few of the orange end bell motors that were run with light magnetic traction.

This is not to say you can't ruin a D1XX chip- but they seem to hold up fairly well. The components in D124 and D132 chips are the same, only the footprint is different, and I think the circuits are designed to run the heavier, higher voltage D124 cars.

I've never read or heard of anyone repairing N-Digital chips. The only repairs/upgrades I've ever seen mentioned were for SSD chips. Maybe someone will chime in with better news....

I had the same problem chipping a NSR Mosler with a Shark 25K motor with a 26732 Carrera chip. The car ran for 25 laps and stopped. I rechipped the car and the car only ran 3 laps and stopped again. So I took the last chip I just installed in the Mosler into a Carrera D132 car and had no problems. I've since replaced the motor with a new NSR Shark 25K and I haven't had a problem ever since.
This was the 1st NSR motor that has ever gone bad on me. I don't known if this your problem, but a little trouble shooting may be needed.
Hope this helps.
Al

Al ....and the rest of you guys who took a look @ this post....thank you !

like I said I'm stumped.....I removed the motor from the car and it's running analog as I type this on the test stand...very rarely have I seen or NOT heard motor this SMOOTH.........it's running great !, but that chipping issue(s)......... well I think this is what I'm going to do:

For testing I'm going to sub an Slot.it 21K or maybe the 25K motor...........when happy with the setup I'll restore the NSR 25K, as the race the car is heading for is Analog.

Just for some data here are the test stand results for the NSR and a couple Slot.its...:

RPM

Motor 5V 10v 12v 13v

NSR 25K 10540 21770 26170 28128
NSR 22K 9450 19300 23100 25200
Slotit 21K 9250 18688 22780 24900
Slotit 25K 10450 19460 23100 23900

Ya I know that 25K Yellow didn't spec even @ 13V.....Look I'm trashing Slotit here so easy on the typing finger(s) Ok guys....just posting what I got.... period.

As for my track testing I'm going with Orange 21.K for now, if you guys have any futher thoughts on the chipping problem or experiences with chipping this NSR 25K please let us know..

Thanks again

Dick

Dick,

It may just be a case of the NSR motor being too powerful for the N-Digital decoder chip.

Best regards,
Brian
