I still don't have a Sideways car yet, but I must say that the front motored Capri can be made to run very very well. I don't think that the 250 GTO is an apples to apples comparison with the Capri. The platform for the Capri (long, low and wide) lends itself pretty well to making a competitive car.
We are racing Group 5 cars at my house in Edison, NJ this Friday evening. It's our series race and we have seen Sideways, Fly, MRRC, and a Racer 935 finish at the top. If you want come on out I am sure that if you want to run a Sideways car there will be a few loaners. I have both the Capri and Lancia and both are exceptional cars.
I just picked up my first Racer Lancia Beta and WOW! I have about 7 Fly Lancia/Capris and I must say, the Racer car is finished to a very high quality. I love my Fly cars but this Racer has me very excited about the future of this line of cars from Racer.
I believe they have a Grp. Bimmer in the wings along with the Porsche "Moby Dick". I will certainly purchase both of these offerings.
My Group 5 collectionis really insane already but I really really like this field of cars. I'll have to post pics of the group soon. I also recently acquired a special edition #69 Capri that is almost to pretty to run....almost
I have seen these Gaugemaster SE cars in person and not to take anything away from your photo skills but your picture does not do this car justice. The color they chose for this car is simply amazing, a real thing of beauty. You're right, it is too pretty to race.

p.s. I have one of the new Sideways Lancias too, just got it in fact, and it is a real beaut as well as being a fine race car. Much easier to get one of these to be competitive than any Fly ever was. Out of the box with just a pod adjustment and an oiling it beats my fastest Fly group 5 car by 2 tenth and I have'nt even started to play with the many chassis options available. Good looks and great performance, what more can you ask from a slot car?
LOL, no offense taken. It's the photo from the ebay auction I won. My photo skills are much worse!!
Yes, it is a great looking car but I run everything I buy because it looks even better in motion!
My Racer Lancia really is a joy to drive. Super quick and handles like it's on plastic with a mag on my little routed 3 laner. I will spend a lot of money on the Racer Grp 5 cars over the coming 12 months for sure. Keep 'em coming boys!Attachment 34076

What specifically are the Group 5 manufactures and cars that are being raced?
Rick
If you mean slot car manufactures then Fly and I would say now Sideways are the two biggies, they are the best performers out of the box, especially the new Sideways cars. The Flys take a bit more loving to get them to run well but they can be made to perform with a little patients and perseverance.
Others that come to mind are cars from Monogram and Carrera although in some cases these cars require almost a complete new chassis to make them anything like competitive with the Fly, and Sideways cars. They most certainly will need some major mods to make them run decently at minimum. I am sure there are others out there that I have forgotten or just don't know about but these are the major brands.
Below is a listing of what is considered to be the 4th generation of group 5 cars which were raced from 1976 through 1982. These are the cars that we are discussing in this thread and represent the hayday of Group 5 racing. Other cars that raced in Group 5 during this period that have not been produced by any slot car manufacturer that I know of.
The Toyota was produced by MRRC. I have one and with just a bit of tuning (motor swap, change of tires, etc) the car is very quick and is competitive with the Racer Lancia.
My next project will be a Monogram Jager BMW 320 I just picked up on the Cheap. My tuning skills (such as they are) will be sorely tested trying to make this car competitive!
