Default For the Love of the Firebird: Need help with research, pictures and chassis

Hi Folks, I am going to do my very first scratchbuild that will take part in a race series. The rules are fairly open:
1/25 or 1/24 scale
Plastic, resin, fiberglass (no lexan)
The car must have been used in a real race
Car must be from 1977 or older

The series gives concours points for maximum authenticity.
As some know, I am a huge Firebird fan (I owned a ’76) and I knew they raced in SCCA so I went off to find a kit and a driver to make one.
After over 12 hours of research I am still not to a point where I feel I know enough to get the right model.
Couple of points: When choosing a car I try to go with one I have a personal connection to. I personally do not like the ’69 Firebird. The grill looks wedged in and glued on IMHO . I am looking at ’68 and ’70 (1/2) to ’73.
My first choice is the ‘68 (actually a ‘69 with ’68 body) that race at Michigan International Speedway in 1969: http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...969-05-11.html
Advantages: dead easy paint job, raced on my “home” track
Where I need your help:
I have googled absolutely every combination I can think of and there are very very very few color pictures of the car and nearly none of the inside. If anyone can tell me more about the this car I would greatly appreciate it!
I also need some good pictures of the driver Jerry Titus. What color were his overalls, helmet etc.?
Again, massive googlage has not brought up too much…

Another candidate might be the Titus’ car from 1970:
http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...970-06-07.html
Trouble here is ’70 Firebird kits seem rarer and harder to get. The same question as above apply:

I also need some good pictures of the driver Jerry Titus. What color were his overalls, helmet etc.?
Failing that I may go for Buddy Baker ’71 Firebird, whereby I have not found a ’71 kit that would work:
http://www.grandnationaleast.com/Race72.htm
Any sources?
General question: Allowed motors are Fox (Plafit), F10 (Sakatsu), FOX10 (Jens/Slotvision/Werk/JP) (essentially 13D/Mabuchi type)
What kind of chassis would work best for Trans Am cars?
We race on a big Carrera Exlcusiv and wood routed track.
I am based in Europe and a friend is willing to bring stuff over form the States hence my need for a decision soon. J

You should get a copy of "The Cars of Trans-Am Racing 1966-1972" by David Tom. Firebirds were not raced as much because the motors were down on power or tended to blow up. For a time they were able to use Chevy motors because the Pontiac cars made in Canada had Chevy motors. RMS Resins did both a '68 and '70 Firebird in 1/32nd scale, I have both of those, but I used fantasy liveries.

I have heard of that book, in fact the club mentions for their Trans Am class the car must be in there.
I have had a quick look and it is very rare and very expensive and I only want info on the Firebird so it might be overkill..

I thought RSM only did 1/32?
I need 1/25 or 1/24 and I am not a good enough modeller to make windows etc..

This is the Titus/Ward 1968 Firebird that won its class at Sebring in 1969 (although that race technically was not a Trans Am event).

Yes I saw that. The car does not have be in a Trans Am event, it simply has to have been entered into a race.
I like that car a lot but I am drawn to the MIS car ... nevertheless, question:
Would the interior of the two cars mroe or less be the same?

Here's a page of photos of the restored 1970 Firebird. The little black 1 next to the big blue 8 isn't correct.

http://www.historictransam.com/Drive...Firebird8.html

There are photos of the car at the 1970 Laguna Seca round without the rear spoiler, the shaker, and the lower wheel flares, because the Firebird Trans Am had not been homologated in time for the race.

The book is not difficult to find. https://www.amazon.com/Cars-Trans-Am...213&sr=1-2-ent
Used copies in very good condition can be had for under $40.

Yes the 27 is my favorite so far.... what about the roll cage? I don't think they used nets in the windows... I am also curious about what gauges, gear shifters etc. are there.

Thanks for the link to book. As I said, this is likely the only Trans Am series type car I will make so forking out 40 USD$ for a couple of pictures seems a bit steep to me... maybe I am stingy... :-(

If you buy the book on eBay, you should be able to resell for about what you paid.

Jerry appears to be wearing the same helmet in these photos.

Here's a photo I've never seen of the 70 car at Laguna. Jerry's helmet appears blue.

Here's a photo of the interior of the red/white car. https://assets.hemmings.com/blog/wp-...4/12/2140i.jpg Maybe the #27 was similar. Also, a photo of Titus in the Mustang http://oldtimersmagazine.com/wp-cont...m-racing-3.jpg and the Helmet appears to have the same colour band, maybe blue with two bands on the peek too. And another http://www.nevadamusclecars.com/wp-c...erry-focus.jpg

Some very good photos! Thanks!

Does anyone know of a good chassis to put under it?
