Triumph TR4

Some more questions on the above. I've been looking at as many pictures of racing TR4s as I can and intend to put a roll bar on my redition of it. I can't find any pictures looking down on the cockpit. Did they have Tonneau covers? Mine will be inline so the moto needs to be covered.

Most TR racers I've seen (and I've seen quite a few) generally don't mess with tonneaus. Most run with open cockpits. There's little aerodynamic advantage to having one. As for roll bars/cages there are a large variety in vintage racing.

Actually many cars raced with the tonneau covers for years, either through fashion or the concept of aerodynamic advantage. I suppose if there was an advantage it would have been in classes/cars with cut down windshields. Also, for a period a number of cars began using "rigid" tonneau covers to skirt the aero rules a few decades ago, but the SCCA caught on and banned them.

I did a Spitfire mold a few years ago and did a tonneau cover on mine for the same reason (and because my 1:1 car always competed with one in autocross.

Not to quibble here, but I don't think that early Spit would have been allowed to race without some sort of a roll bar. The early simple roll bars could have allowed a tonneau cover to be used. Autocrossing is a different form of competition. To my knowledge roll bars weren't required when I ran my DSP (D Street Prepared) TR4 in the early 90s. I had a full four point rollbar in the street/autocross Spitfire for 20 years, after getting a couple wiped out with side hits it seemed like the common sense thing to do!

As far as the TR4/250...I still have a bunch of the 1/32 MPC/Airfix European Racing series cars from 40 years ago still in boxes!



I've often meant to build one just to complete a small series of British iron...I have a an XKE, MGB, Spitfire, TR7, Mini Clubman and Austin Clubman and Healey in 1/32...and I need to pickup an MGA and build the TR4...does anyone make a Tr6?

Thanks for all the replies, I painted it the other day then it rained while I had it sitting outside so a touch up is in order. Still not sure if I'll do it as a hardtop or with a small racing screen. I just have to use the BRM wire wheels. If its an open cockpit then its tooneau cover or not tooneau cover. At least a hardtop would cover the internals.
