  • Warning - CU firmware upgrade

I was attempting to upgrade an older CU to the latest and greatest Carrera version 337. I tried with my iphone 6plus first - it's running iOS 11.0.2. The upgrade failed at 17%.
Then attempted the same with a friends iphone 7plus - running firmware 11.0.2. The upgrade failed at 21%.
Today I tried again with my ipad running iOS 10.3.3 and it worked without any hick-up.

So, I suggest to be careful updating your CU with any iOS running version 11.0.2. Most likely any 11.X.X is causing issues, but can't confirm.

    Cheers!

    Seb

You are right on the iOS 11.x issues. The developer is aware and is working on a fix. You can see what is going on by registering to SmartRace's support page.

This isn't a SmartRace issue- it was/is a problem with the Carrera app updating CU firmware.

Gotchya now. I assumed it was all related to SmartRace because you linked to it in the other thread regarding the SmartRace connection issues.

I think the issue is more to do with update process in general rather than a particular operating system. A few posts have come up in regards to not being able to successfully update the firmware. It seems it can take a few tries to get the firmware updated.

          Best regards,
          Brian

There have been many failed update attempts. The first releases always failed on android, but were successful on approved Apple devices. Then they worked on some android devices. This reported issue is for Apple devices running iOS 11. Four different devices (two different phones Seb tried on his CU, and two on another users CU) running 11+ failed- devices running v10 were successful on the same CUs.

In that thread, the original post was re: Smartrace connection. But then he attempted to update his CU (per the advice given in that thread), and the update failed. Repeatedly. So while the thread title was re: Smartrace, it ended with him being unable to update his CU. Since the failure was left unresolved in that thread, I linked the iOS v11 update woes which have been recently reported.

                Any progress on this issue?

DISREGARD - I found another thread that indicates that proper connection will require a new App Connect dongle that cannot be fixed with the software update.

                Hello all:

All my phones are iOS 11.2.5.

Am I just stuck? Do I need to just buy a new control unit? Any other ideas?

                thanks much, Steve.

I have an iPhone and iPad running iOS 11.2.5 and a Samsung Tab S3 with Android 7. All would have the issue of the Carrera Race App dropping a connection and failing to update my control unit. In my case, my goal was to get SmartRace to work, however, in order for that to happen, the control unit had to be updated first. And SmartRace would never connect via bluetooth. I emailed the creator of SmartRace and we trouble shooted via email. The final conclusion was either the control unit or the App Connect was faulty. My original App Connect was manufactured in 08/17 and got a new one sent to me which was manufactured in 10/17.

With the new App Connect and the Samsung Tab S3 running Android 7, the Carrera Race App connected and the control unit upgraded without dropping the connection. My App Connect was the problem. And with regards to my iPhone and iPad running iOS 11.2.5, I didn't try connecting to the Carrera Race app with the iPhone/iPad after the Samsung took care of updating the control unit just cuz I didn't want it to cause more issues. As for SmartRace, it now works on the Samsung but does not work with the iPhone/iPad.

                  Hope this helps,

                  Bob I.

If SmartRace still doesn't work on the iPhone or iPad- then I don't think your new app connect has the updated firmware, either. Does SmartRace find the dongle, but then drop the connection after 90 seconds (or less)? If so your app connect device is not one of the updated units that works with iOS 11.

It sounds like your first app connect dongle was just plain defective. It was failing the CU update not because it refused to work with iOS 11, but because it just didn't work period. The second app connect you received did work, and you were able to update the control unit using your android device. But if that second app connect won't connect to your Apple device- then it *still* doesn't have the updated app connect firmware.

SmartRace on iOS 11.2.5 never makes the connection to my new App Connect. So I'll have to agree it isn't one of the latest with a new firmware upgrade to work with iOS 11.2.5. I'm just foolish enough to go out and buy a brand new Samsung tablet to get past this issue

Looks like we were so happy to get everything to work with the Tablet that I just plain forgot and never happened to test my iPad with my new App Connect. So my App Connect must have the new updated firmware cuz it works with my iPad iOS 11.2.5 running SmartRace. It was manufactured in 10/17. Good luck and hope this helps.

P.S. Well.....rereading Bruce's post, let me run a race for more than a couple mins...So, I ran a race for about 5 mins and 35 laps with refueling. All works well with SmartRace without dropping the connection Regarding my App Connect blue light/led...it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't but doesn't affect the connection.

Then that app connect definitely has the updated firmware! So we know for sure anything made from oct 2017 on has the fix.

                            Progress!!!

Now - Can anyone direct me to a retailer that would have current stock? I hoping to not order an Appconnect and be stuck in the same situation. Also - does anyone have a contact email for Carrera USA so I can start the process of sending my old one back?

                            Thanks Steve.

When I got my old App Connect replaced via the hobby shop I bought it from, the new one was sent directly from their Carrera distributor in New Jersey, but I didn't think to write down the information which was on the shipping box.
