  • 1/32 Speed and Distance Conversion

Ok math Wizards.... help me with this one. Yes... not so math quick as I gave up paying attention in math about 9th grade. I should probably throw this at my 12 year old to save me some grief.

So to make it simple... for us simpletons.

If a track is 100 feet long what is the conversion in miles?

    Show math please.

Since Bruce's RMS calculates speed/MPH, wouldn't that change based on which cars are running 132/124. Can't recall if there is a check box in the software to choose between 132/124.

Guess I am wondering how accurate the speed is on the RMS.

Feels great that I have been driving between 160 and 220/MPH

Calculation would also help me figure out how many feet is a 1/4 mile in 132 and 143 scale.

5280ft/mi divided by 32 = 165 ft of track for 1 mile in 1/32 scale

    100 divided by 165 = .606 mile track

      What he said, eh?

I reckon on a fast home basement type no-mag 100' 1/32 track, a well set up car on silicone tires should be able to manage to average about 10' per second just using physics without magnetism being involved. Personally, I've never understood the attraction ...

Strangely, the HO guys with massive magnets and power seem to favour measuring things in inches per second. Go figure.

Personally, I generally choose to display something else other than the 'scale speed'. But yes, there is a selection for 1/24 or 1/32. There is also debate about how to accurately calculate 'scale speed', but I think those who argue in favor of using the area rather than the linear foot length of a track are the exact opposite of you: they don't want to be told their cars are running laps at 300 scale mph because it isn't 'realistic'.

I remember as a kid (some 50+ years ago), one of the common advertising blurbs for HO sets was 'speeds of 600 scale mph!'. I think that's the main reason I included it as an option in the software.

Thanks for the responses. Pretty much just wanted to know for $h1Ts and Giggles. My son and his buddies get a kick out seeing how fast they were driving. Those friends that pop over and have fun on the track get a kick out of it to.

Has anybody taken the time to accurately measure the distance traveled on the different curves. It is easy enough the measure the track length with straights. What lengths are used for the different curves to get an accurate track length. My layout software does not give that calculation.

I use a Tailor's measuring tape right in the slot to measure track.

I used the Carrera route planner (when it existed) years ago, then switched to Slotman for a time, and eventually paid for Ultimate Racer just to use the route planner. All of these has always given me lane lengths, so it's never been an issue. But here's a page that gives the radius of the various *slots*, as well as the radius of the entire curve: http://www.schlitzflitzer.de/carrera...0respectively.
