  • Making due with a small space

It’s been quite a few years since I posted on the forum. After about 3 years of not using all of my Carrera Digital stuff, I decided to build a track in a small space in my living room and spent the whole afternoon carpet racing. This is only about 1/3 of my total track, but I just don’t have the room I used to have with 4 kids in the house. At one point, I had a full giant table with 80 foot of running track, but had to give up the space. I raced both my 1/24 and 1/32 cars, and it was a blast. My 17 year old son even spent 90 mins racing with me, and I got my wife to join us for a while too. The rest of the I spent tuning the cars back up, and running with multiple ghost cars. Man I forgot how fun this is, and what amazing quality of gear Carrera makes. The track is going to stay up for the rest of the week…at some point in the next year, a couple of my kids will be on their own, and moving out to start their lives as young adults. Even know I’m going to miss the snot out of them, I will get some space back to have a large permanent table again. Hope you’re all having fun!

Nothing wrong with a small space.
I prefer my small rally track to the big Carrera with 20’ straight - at least with the 1/32 cars.

That's fantastic, enjoy it! I have mine set up in a small spare bedroom, enough for about a 10x6 track and full borders, enough space for a few people to sit on folding bar stools along the front stretch side, and just enough room for me to get around the track to reach everything on the track, as well as a display unit for the cars. Wish I had more space but thankful to be blessed with the room I do have. This size track does work very well for me, so I know for a fact it doesn't have to be a tremendous track to have fun!

Thanks for the reply everyone. PopPopRacer, please post a pic of your small track if you have the time. I love to see a track fit into a smaller space. For the longest time when I had a big table available (7’x16’), I thought the big tracks were the best for racing, but I find now we have just as much fun with something small. We made the decision to race 1/32 cars with the rear magnet only, and 1/24 with no magnets. On a small track the 1/24 no mags are a blast! We do use premium tires and aftermarket guides on all the cars, but with all the twists and turns, the constant controlled drifting is epic.

            I wish all a Happy Thanksgiving…

Here's my setup, slotracerguy. In the process of slight alterations after installing anti-collision chips and power taps. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

PopPop, nice set up in your small space. Love it! Keep us posted on the anti-collision chips and how they worked out. I’ve been thinking of adding them as well. Did you need the power taps?

Thanks! I don't know how I'll feel in the future, but I've driven thousands of laps in this configuration and I still love it just as much as day one. If I wanted to, I could squeeze in some more feet of track by creating overpasses and such, but I really, really, really dislike the look and thought of them (but that's just my opinion, since I love a generally flat track!) Lol.
I wasn't having any power issue prior to installing the Lane Gates, but their instructions mention that power taps may be necessary. That, along with the sound advice I received from members on this forum (I do have a recent thread about this) to install power taps BEFORE noticeable issues arrive when you have a group of people over, I figured it can't hurt, especially since the track would be in pieces anyway. I installed 5 power taps, making sure I had one next to every lane changer. I admit the thought of it was a little intimidating, but when I actually did it (armed with great tips!), it was a piece of cake, and I HIGHLY recommend everyone do so.
I'm experimenting with having the tv actually on the track, since it's very difficult for me to look away from the racing action to read the screen. I figure my eye can at least catch it as I travel down that short chute behind the tv. As of now, it's blocking the view of some of the chute, but it hasn't been an issue. I may raise it up a few inches on a see-through clear stand or something, or just mount it on a wall if having it there really doesn't help.
Is your track still up and running? I hope you get that space shortly! Just think, you'll miss the kids when they leave home, but then they'll go out in the world and maybe create some grandchildren, aka future racers!!

It's always nice bringing a track out of hibernation. No matter how big or small it is as long as you're enjoying it is all that matters.

PopPop, certainly hoping for grandchildren one day! Can’t wait to race with them as they grow up. I have 4 kids, so I think my chances are positive at least one of them decides to have a family ????
What my kids don’t know, is every January for the last couple years, I’ve been buying a 1/24 set and putting it away. So far there’s two in storage, and planning to buy another this year (my favorite shop to buy from has a sale every January). I’ve also picked up some extra track, cars, borders, pit lanes, and accessories to put away. I’m hoping when my kids do get their own homes someday, I can provide each with their own starter track as a housewarming ????

I did tear down the current track, and will plan to put another up so our family and friends can enjoy over Christmas. I’ll post come new pics…might take some inspiration from your track ????

Dave, your track is simply stunning. The work you’ve put in is outstanding.
