Are Digital Chips Interchangeable?

After 12 years running D132 I am slowly migrating to D124. I have redesigned my layout to accommodate the larger cars, especially with track border. I swap out my D124 and D132 power supply as needed.

I have chipped many D132 cars over the years by purchasing second hand chips.

I have not yet opened up my 2 D124 cars to inspect the chips. If I buy an analog 124 car will I be able to pop in a D132 chip?

Wondering if the fit is the same and if the D132 chips can handle the higher voltage required for the D124 cars.

The boards are quite different. I believe the 124 board handles more current. I am now trying out MPL chips. These run 12-18.5v and can be used in 143, 132, 124 cars. Chips are nearly the size of a postage stamp which makes fitment a lot more flexible.

My experience is somewhat limited, but I've never had a problem with the D132 chip powering a D124 car. They are quite robust. Not to say you couldn't blow one- but I don't think it's necessary to use a D124 chip.

Thanks Bruce... How about fitment? Traditionally I use the 26732. Do these pop in and out of newer D124 cars with ease as they do with D132 cars? Again... I have not yet popped my D124 cars open yet to see what is actually inside.

First of all, the new layout looks great.Once you go D124 it's hard to go back.. It's really easiest from a mounting standpoint to use the D124 chip to upgrade a Carrera exclusive car. I have seen some anecdotal evidence that the 26732 D132 chip can have life expectancy issues if you run them in the 19 ish volt range for extended period of time. I've also observed that the D124 chip is tough as nails - the only one I have ever had an issue with was a cold solder joint.

Something to consider- as other's have said, if you are chipping older Carrera 1/24 analog cars, probably best to use a Carrera D124 chip. If you are chipping BRM or Scaleauto cars, just realize they may be overpowered at 18 volts.

Thanks Ed! You must have seen my layout on FB post? At the current time, I am simply swapping between the D132 and D124 factory power supplies, so don't suspect I am going into that 19 volt range.

Yes!!! I am finding that out already. Just in my initial runs of my 2 Porsche RSRs I love them. Weight and wheelbase really make a difference compared to the D132. WoW! I am guessing some of my 132 cars will be going up for sale to finance my new addiction.

You can swap the motor. There’s a direct replacement online that runs well at 12 volts.
