  • Still no news on the Nissan?

It's been quite a while and the MR Slotcar website is still down. Has this company passed away?

  • #2
No, not yet at least. I raced with Ernie a couple of weeks ago. He said they're in a plant moving situation which has delayed things, but he still intends to release new products, including the Nissan. I believe the current timeline is late summer 2014.

I'm afraid for Ernie that SLot.it just announced the Nissans --so that would be a DOA in my book -- do not pass go -- go straight to Lola T-70's -- at least I don't think that Slot.it will go there!!!

After the 962, Ernie could be forgiven for thinking that Maurizio has it out for him -- but I really think it's a matter of people of like minds heading for the same cars...

Hint to Ernie: Don't tool up either a Mercedes CLK or a Chapparal 2F, OK?????

Lolas, McLarens -- Can Am and USRRC cars !!!

                Hi Everyone

We have indeed shelved the Nissan R89C - it's a disappointment for me, but in this market there is no proprietary hold on a model just because you're the first to announce it.

I'd like to mention that the past year has been difficult because we have had to move away from our factory in China since the pace of developing and issuing cars was just too slow. We now have engaged a new factory and I'll be visiting them in a couple of weeks. I'll report back to you on my return.

                Regards
                Ernie

Sorry to hear it, Ernie, but we wish you the best, whatever may be coming down the pike.

                    Which car??

I have a friend with a model train company --and he has had his ups and downs with his Chinese factory-folks.

Since I like so many different types of racers, it is hard to even suggest something that would be unlikely to be built by a bigger firm --and then you have to ask, "If they are not building it, is it because it wouldn't sell?" And just as you try to reason it out, along comes Scaley with a twin-wing McLaren M7C GP car... and you go, "seriously?" But I pre-ordered mine!

Perhaps --significant cars with less 'liveries' to model is a sweet spot. Price would have to be higher, of course, 'limited' --but I could buy a couple of Aston Martin AMR-1's or a Courage....???

And the Lolas would still be sweet... !!!

Good luck and keep at it!!

                    Steve

I suppose that this would drive me to building my next car in secret until I had 'em all on the way to the distributors. that'd give you the best chance.
I bet they'd gobble 'em up if you could do pull it off. and since I'm pretty sure that we'd all pretty much grab up anything that Ernie should make, I'd think that preorders and advertising (or lack thereof) can't be all that much of a hindrance. I've been involved in a couple startups over the years, and have seen that a better mousetrap (e.g., why didn't I think of that?) is seriously subject to one's being cheated out of the design before you can get the funding to build it. unless it's totally obscure or serves a very tiny market (way smaller than a good high-end slotcar would draw).
so that'd be the way I'd go. I don't think that I'd even advertise that I was planning anything- I'd just do it. maybe also change factories if that's an option, maybe get parts built from multiple sources, or use a front man.
                      speedy
(now I've done it! now we won't hear anything!) (all we can do is hope. or get a pm.)

                        Unfortunately, you're probably right, Speedy.

What makes it even tougher is that Ernie's in Slot. It's back yard, ie, Group C. If there is model overlap, his competitor will be making a quality version at a good price. I'm hopeful that Ernie does well -- he's a talented designer and builder.

I hope Ernie gets his production sorted and can find a niche...there's a gap introduction chain for the filling, between low volume resin, and the big guys who themselves have QC issues..must be really hard for people wanting short run volumes, good quality and reasonable price..3D perhaps someday..

Depending upon the volume, low-run manufacturers can also consider direct sales --as has occured with a couple of specialist model train manufacturers --and they seem to be doing OK. The system also allows for 'dealers' and hobby shops to be brokers -they take the orders, collect the cash --but the manufacturer ships directly to the customer --
