I do have a variable power supply. Is power the only function of the transformer on the digital sets?

Yes. All the work is done inside the control unit (power/control track). Just feed dc volts to the CU. Most guys will cut the plug off the OEM power supply and wire it to their variable power supply.

Ok, so according to Carrera the Control Unit 30352 for the 1/24 set allows 4 cars at a time but the 1/32 controller allows 6. Are they different control units or is the difference just the power supplied by the transformers?. I like Dave's idea about buying the 1/24 set, I just want to make sure I have full 1/32 functionality if I did go that route because I think 1/32 is what I would use most.

        Thanks, Brian

PS: Can anyone recommend the best website to purchase from?

It's a sad state that our hobby is in, when hobbyists don't ask which stores are best to deal with! Surely there's some place decent somewhere in Massachusetts?

Anyways, this seems like a good time to remind folks of these SCI Rules:

I apologize if I broke a forum rule, did not intend to. I’ve tried google searching for a hobby shop that deals in slot cars and the closest I found is a 45 minute drive. Perhaps I’ll take a drive to see what they have.

                Hello,

A ping pong table works well . They are cheaply found on some of the for sale sites in your local area .
Here is lay out they I like it runs well and was able to fit on the table.

                Thanks , Brian

I like that layout! Did you start with a set then add pieces?

The D132 and D124 control units are identical. As you guess, it's a limitation of the power supply. There are ways to run 6 D124 cars, starting with a better power supply. ;-)

Due to the extended supply chain shortages, GETTING a set might be a little harder than normal. Just keep your eyes out. Checking on various secondary markets is a good idea, too (evilbay, FB marketplace, craigslist, goodwill online, etc).

The 1/32 sets have a 14.8V power supply. The 1/24 sets have an 18V power supply. As Greg said all you do is set the power settings on the control unit lower with the 18V power supply when running the 1/32 cars. It won't hurt them. All the track pieces (digital) are the same whether it's 1/32 or 1/24.

Sorry, brain fart as Greg pointed out it is 14.8 not 13.8.

Interestingly, my D132 PSU shows an output of 14.8v. I have not measured it, but that's what the label on the brick says.

Well just when I thought I had made up my mind (Carrera 23630 Born To Perform Digital 124) I have a look at Policar. The track looks interesting being wider that Scalextric but not was wide as Carrera. Are they offering a digital set yet? Keep in mind I'm looking for something out of the box right now. If not available now does anyone know a time frame? Wondering if its worth waiting to see what they come out with. I don't have a the table set up for the layout yet so I'm in no rush.

                          Thanks Brian

Policar track is great stuff, though there are only one or two sets of it. It will be oXigen digital compatible when their lane changer hits the market, probably some time next year. A pre-production unit is being shown by slot.it at a trade fair right now, and it looks nice.
oXigen is a great system, though not quite as "turn key" as sets like Scalextric and Carrera. That said, both of those are easy systems to upgrade to oXigen later on, if you feel the need.
I would not recommend trying to graft either Scalextric or Carrera digital systems into other track systems, even Policar. It's more involved than even those who are familiar with the systems think.

I guess it depends on how urgently you want a fully functional digital system, weighed against how badly you want Policar track. I'll grant it's nice track, plus it offers FIVE different radii turns, including the innermost being smaller radius than Carrera, so even at 1/24 size, can fit more track into the same space as compared to Carrera.

Ok sorry for all the dumb questions but the more I research the further down the rabbit hole I go...

Still curious about what Policar will have to offer in digital and when.

If I'm going to run largely 1/32 (without magnets) how important are borders with Carrera track?

Is there primer on Oxigen? I see it mentioned a lot and I'm just curious.

                              Thanks, Brian

Sorry MrF, didn't see your last post prior to my last batch of questions... Because I have time and am curious, I would like to learn more about Oxigen. Is it a system designed to convert analog tracks to digital?
