  • T/A SCX vs Scaley Vs Pioneer

I thought after picking up my SCX Cuda today I would give it run with my Scaley and Pioneer Mustangs

first off I will list what mods have been done to each car

    Scaley Mustang
    TR Racing tyres
    trim chassis to get float
trued front tyres to allow guide to sit fully in slot
moved pinon across and shimmed rear axle
    removed bumpers
added 3g's of weight to the front
    glued motor in

    Pioneer Notch back Mustang
    TR Racing tyres
Scaley mk1 escort front tyres trued
    Trimmed Chassis
Lowed the car by 1.5 mm
    7mm deep guide
2g's of weight under the drop tank
    removed dpr plug
    glued motor in

    SCX Cuda
    TR Racing Tyres
Trued front tyres to allow guide to sit fully in the slot
    Hard wired motor
    Trimmed chassis
    Solid front axle
added 2.5g's to each side of the pod

    Speed trap Report
    Scaley 345k's
    Pioneer 312k's
    SCX 337k's

So it seems on this track the Pioneer's motor is punchy but lacks the top end vs other 18k motors but the scaley seems to have the most grunt on the track

Sector 1 on my track needs a car that will break well and put the power done out of corners really well

    Scaley 3.731
    Pioneer 3.588
    SCX 3.672

The pioneer car was tops on putting the power down and mid corner speed seemed best with the scx but it chatted a little on corner exit more tuning will improve this

Sector 2 on this track is pretty open with the 2 longest straights with a banked sweeper the speed trap is at the end of the straight after the sweeper

    Scaley 1.081
    Pioneer 1.188
    SCX 1.090

Its pretty close here the Pioneer Mustang was the nicest through the banked corner but it was a bit slower in the sector mainly due to the slower motor

The rest of the track is where you need to control the tail of the car and control a few slides

Through this section the SCX seemed to have the most grip and was the easier to control slides but the scaley did not handle this section as well as the Pioneer car

Total lap times after doing 30 laps with each car
    Scaley 6.401
    Pioneer 6.388
    SCX 6.291

Its really hard to to say no car is way better then the next i say its down to what type of track your racing on. As you can see with how the cars work on each sector of this track

Cheers I hope you find this helpful and feel free to comment

J Sin, on the track where I race the SCX and Pioneer can't run with the Scaley Camaros. This particular track has a very long back straight however. I've done the mods you speak of to all of my cars with the exception of a little less weight and none of them have been lowered. I've also put a 10 tooth pinion on the Cuda which helped it's top end. In a drag race of over 30 feet, it's still the slowest of the three.

Very nice bit of work there... I have yet to get the Pioneer Mustang, but it is in my future.

May I ask why you replaced the front stub axles on the SCX?? of all the stub axle designs I have seen this is hands down the best and I have found no problems with tire rub or the tires and wheels rattling around like on the Fly cars..

Interesting findings, but I have a question. What is this "drop tank" you refer to on the Pioneer Mustang? I am aware of a drop tank on a P51 Mustang, but not the Ford Mustang.

The reason i changed to the solid axle was because 1 wheel didnt spin freely, with the pioneer cars i think if they where fitted with a scaley motor they would be a lot quicker its the next mod with mine

Hmmm, so the RX-42B is still slower on a long straight than a standard scaly mabuchi motor? I'm curious as my track is going to have roughly an 18' back straight. I want my Vette to be able to hang with my scaley DBR9/Jag XKRS/Ferrari F-430/Viper on the straight.

Most RX-42B's rev about 18,000 RPM on 12 volts. Most Scaletric standard motors do about 21,000. Torque is approximately the same; 75 to 100 gcm/12v at stall.

If you gear them both 3:1, the results are predictable. Rear axle speed can rise as high as 7,000 RPM for the Scalextrix, but only 6,000 RPM for the SCX. I am assuming the Scalex car is geared 3:1, but is it?

If you adjust the gears on the SCX car to 2.7:1 (by installing a 10t pinion), rear axle speed increases to ~ 6,667; This may approach "parity", but with the same approximate torque rating, the SCX will accelerate slower, due to the taller gears. Given the RPM and torque ratings of these two motors there is no way they can be geared to perform the same unless you find a particularly rapid RX-42B. However, the next SCX motor up the scale is the Pro Speed, which tends toward 20,000 RPM/12v, with about 120 gcm torque.

About an hour of no-load break-in time on about 6 volts does increase the speed of SCX motors, due to their hard brush material.

              Edit:

If the Scalextric car is geared otherwise, (11:36?) or 3.27:1, rear axle speed is ~ 6,422 RPM. This should eliminate the final-velocity gap in comparison to the SCX car. But consider the torque, which is what impels a car to accelerate: Torque at the rear axle would be (assuming 100 gcm for both motors) 327 gcm for Scalextric, 300 gcm for SCX with 9:27 gears, and 270 gcm if geared 10:27. Again, the SCX comes up second quickest, even with re-gearing to a taller ratio.

We haven't run the Pioneers yet, but we have run the SCX and Scaley NASCARs together every week for a couple of months. The track we are on is a Windsor - lots of high speed and the classic tricky donut.

Scaley places here sometimes, but so far SCX is dominant. They out run 'em on the straights and handle easier. We give the Scaleys the B-Nova/Slot-it universal guide mod - we run the stock SCX guide. We do work the 42B tuning but we are at the limits and the Scaleys are very close. Before we worked 42B tuning there was always a 42B in the field that was as strong or stronger than the Scaley motors. A big part of the Scaley advantage here is in it's coast ability at track calls. We're gonna up the teeth on the pinion for them and see.

Of course, little of this applies to a tight twisty course. And the nimbleness of 11/36 could be the difference.
