  • Aurora AFX Quadlam Reborn

Finished track testing of the 4 lamination double wind armature. The final version is 4.6 ohms with 3 degrees of advanced timing. It is considerably faster than the OS3 5.5 ohm Tornado, DC-HO 5.1 Ohm, and a wickedly balanced 5.6 Ohm Mean Green. Plenty of torque coming out of turns and runs cool. Will have the Black Widow Quad at the Indiana Slot Car Show 11/13. The tool for the double wind worked well and the wire is laid down nicely. I am very happy with the way these turned out.

Do you expect to be selling these armatures in the future? HOCOC has a Modified Madness class where the armatures are open and I would like to give one a spin.

Yes I will be selling these. I build a few motors for road racing and drag. You can see some of them at my Facebook page Glenn Zaroski. Rich my email is glennz1962@icloud.com I am building stock to sell at the show right now, but I can divert one to you before the show. Email me and I will get one to you.

I would like to welcome Glenn as an Advertiser on SCI. I hope his efforts with the arms he is building do well. They are works of art, and a skill not many have, especially in HO scale.
Thank you Glenn for supporting SCI, best of luck with this venture!!

Good news, it's been notable how helpful Glenn has been to other HO races in the short time he's been here.

The dude is definitely an expert!

Thanks for the kind words. Just want everyone know if they would like information or help on their pancake motor building I am more than happy to share what I know.

I got a couple of Glenn's armatures last Friday and was able to do a little testing with them. The first is a Quadralam clone, 4.5 ohm 4 lamination double wind with 5° advance, the second is a 8.4 ohm 3 lamination double wind with no advance. HOCOC only has one class where these armatures can be used, that is the Modified Madness class that uses a T-Jet chassis and large diameter tires. The cars replicate the sort cars that were run in the Northeast from the mid '60's to the early 70's.

The #14 car was a good runner, but that needed a little more power, so it became my test subject. The car had a DC-HO 4.7 ohm custom wind on an Auto World 3 lamination blank and 1100 gauss Super II magnets. The best lap time on my 4X16' MaxTrax oval was 3.093 seconds. With the 8.4 ohm armature the best lap time was 2.994 seconds, the car had stronger acceleration and did not quite reach top speed on the 12 foot straights. A 0.099 second improvement in lap times may not sound like much, but after 12 minutes of racing that would amount to 7.7 laps! I expect that during an actual race I could easily do 3.1 second laps, that armature makes for a consistent easy drive.
The Quadralam proved to be even more powerful, my best time was 2.925 seconds. It was difficult for me to do consistent lap times, the car had no brakes and I had to shut down halfway down the straights. I could get by with no or very minimal brakes with the 8.4 ohm armature, with the Quadralam I had the brakes up to 9. A person with better reflexes could get more out of the Quadralam.
The car that I was using is not ideal with the sort of power that the Quadralam has. It is my understanding that the double winds were developed for Magnatraction and X-Traction cars on a road course. My track is in its oval configuration, but I plan on switching back to the road course configuration after the next HOCOC race. HOCOC does have a class that uses Magnatraction and X-Traction chassis, but the double wind armatures would not be legal in those. I have some magnatraction cars with regular Aurora 14 ohm armatures and I plan on trying the double winds in one of those. With more magnetic downforce the Quadralam should be more manageable for me.

Thank you Rich for the time and effort in testing out the armatures. I am glad the 8.4 ohm motor is working for you. At first glance it seems like a quirky outlier build. However it is a pretty fast motor with a tamer power curve.

Since these armatures were developed for use in Magnatraction type cars I thought that I would run them in that type of car before I returned my track to its road course configuration. The car that I used was already fast, I won my very first HO race with it back in 2001. The car has a Road Race Replica Fairgrounds Camaro body. With the stock armature the best lap time was 2.625 seconds, with the 8.4 ohm double wind arm it was 2.415 seconds and with the 4.5 ohm Quadralam it was 2.395. Once again I had to use full brakes with the Quadralam and the car never got near its top speed. I was hoping that with the extra magnetic downforce that a Magnatraction car has that the Quadralam would have a real advantage.
I have now converted the track to a road course. Even with the stock 14 ohm armature the car that I used on the oval was difficult to drive, so I switched to an X-Traction car, again with a RRR Fairgrounds Camaro body. That car was perfectly managable on the 50 foot road course, the best lap was 5.401 seconds. With the 8.4 ohm armature the best lap time dropped to 5.083 seconds and with the Quadralam it was 4.980 seconds. Once again I had to use full brakes with the Quadralam. That armature plainly has more power than the other armatures, but I did not have long enough straights to take advantage of it. I expected that with that arm the car would be very difficult to drive on the road course, but that was not the case. The main problem that I had was the tendency to snap the tail around in the infield S curve. The cure for that might be to replace the car's slip-on silicone tires with silicone on sponge tires. Super Tires Silver Edition tires might also be an improvement. Stronger magnets might also be helpful, Magnatraction or X-Traction ceramic magnets are not as strong as the better T-Jet magnets. There may be some polymer magnets lurking around that could be tried. My longest straight is 12 feet, on a track with longer straights and/or banked turns the Quadralam would be more likely to have an advantage.
When I finished the testing I put the 8.4 ohm arm back in the number 14 Modified Madness coupe, we will be running that class at LenJet on Sunday.

I lent the 14 car to a friend who got 2nd place with it on the LenJet banked trioval. I told him that it would be an easy drive. I spoke to the guy that won the race and I believe that he will be ordering an 8.4 ohm armature
