    If the dyno's roller has any runout the car will bounce or even jump off of your dyno. If the car's rear axle/wheels/tires are not running true the same thing will happen, which actually makes for a good test.

      A combination tool !

      Im old enough to remember a home spun run out tool. Essentially it consisted of a plate where one could lash the chassis down. A hinged rod was affixed to the chassis jig so that it could be laid across the running rim or tire. The end of the rod extended behind the chassis, where a pointer registered on a rule.

      Run out was indicated by the amount of "bob" at the pointer. Beyond the ancient visual of the apparatus, I can recall the particulars other than I saw in a slot-rag from the golden age.

      It stuck with me all these years.

        We use an old micro scale from Harbor Freight to measure magnet strength. It was pretty consistent. The flat tray was steel and the cover was clear plastic. The cover was marked for chassis or single magnet for consistent measurements. Turn it on, reset the scale at zero, put the cover on, put the chassis or magnet on the marked place on the cover and take your reading. The magnet force would pull the tray up pulling the scale into the negative. Very useful. Very consistent. The later versions and one they now offer have a plastic or aluminum tray. Glue metal in the tray and you can still use it.

          MM, a dial indicator works very well, and gives you a readout in thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter. You can buy a serviceable unit for modest money. Check Amazon and eBay.

          I use mine directly on my tire truing machine as an immediate check of the remaining tire runout. I sometimes have to lubricate the tire to prevent the indicator dragging. A drop of oil does it. But I've found that a well-trued tire will show zero runout -- really! Very convincing.

            The point was that in the land that time forgot, dial indicators didnt grow on trees. The cromagnon run-out indicator was simply a knifty way of skinning the bunny, made from readily available bits. These Egyptian things intrigue hill billy bangers like me.

            Checking run out in H0 is really not needed, 'cuz all the tires are perfect. ;-) jk

              I got my dial gage from Harbor Freight, I could have spent more on one from McMaster-Carr.

                For a tach/Dyno of sorts, I build something out of Lego where the cars drive a big wheel where I measure that wheel's rpm. I get consistent results with it and now I can see easily the results of tuning.

                For example, I took one tjet apart cleaned it and it improved. I noticed a mark on the top plate caused by the idler gear. Smoothed the top and bottom of idler gear on 1000 grit then buffed on paper. The RPM increased by another 10%
