    • John,I have not been there to watch or race. Same goes for that other little one called Summit Point. My friends have told me about it and when they called it Slummit Point I figured it was not worth the effort to get there! Pretty much everything else this side of the Miss river has seen me. The 2 left on the bucket list are VIR on the VA-NC border, and the newish Barber Motorsports Complex in AL.

VIR has become one of my favorites in the last 6 years...

Would love to go there.. The big Oak is gone now, I heard...

Used this photo in the 2012 Promo video... I just had to... hahaha

        • Headbands & Halters, that is funny John! VIR is a great track for spectators and racers alike. Plus it's more like a Country Club nowdays with modern amenities. You may have heard the old Carrol Shelby quote, " One lap at VIR is like a hundred at Watkins Glen". And he was talking about the old Watkins Glen, big course. Yes I did hear the old oak blew down or something several years back. It really was a landmark from old,but sometimes things happen that are not intended. Sad but the main thing is the course has been revived.

          • American Racecraft Manta...

            .
Always referred to this AmRac body as a *Fantasy Car*,
because I could never find a 1:1 car like it...

The example in the photo was released in 1983 - '86...
Originally, it was released by COX in 1977, so would think
            the modelling came from 1975 - '76... ???...

It has design elements of Porsche, McLaren, Shadow and
others, I'm sure... The back is completely open...

Any ideas or knowledge out there?... Remember, no newer than 1977...

            • AMRAC "Manta"

To me, the AMRAC Manta was their version of the Formula 5000 single seat open-wheel racer re-bodied with full, enveloping bodywork, and renamed "Can Am" (in an effort to revive the series). Here is my version, previously posted earlier (pardon the poor picture quality):

The body is too shallow to lower appreciably, so to bring that high nose lower to the track,, I added a deep air dam made out of Lexan:

Again, the shallowness of this body precludes it being mounted on a Life Like M or T chassis (which would be an instant upgrade), so it pretty much limits it to the original chassis.........

              • Celebrating 50 years...

I treated myself to a TycoPro Chaparral last summer as a way of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Can Am. I got a 1/32 scale Slot it version too.

Once upon a time, my car would have been sold at JC Penny and came to me in slightly bashed-up original packaging with the corner (and presumably price sticker) cut out. It didn't cost me much and, as I strongly believe that toys are to be played with, I did this...

It looks much better on track than in the packet and is a lot of fun driving on my little AFX layout...

The original white boots are surprisingly grippy, although I have a pair of round-walled Supertires waiting.

I wrote up about the 1966-7 Chaparral Can-Ams and the Tyco model for Slot Car Magazine last September...

I discussed in the article that the model is, to my eyes, most definitely a 1966 2E rather than the 1967 2G that Tyco named it. The Chaparral-mad editor concurred, as does Speedhoppy, who's pretty keen on those white cars too

That sure is a nice blue on there... Is that a custom mix?..

                  Cox/AmRac Manta mounted on a LL T chassis... Snap-fit...

                  LL T-chassis; bottom...

                  LL M-chassis... Snap-fit

                  .
To my knowledge, a COX body will snap onto all AmRac, Rokar Life-Like chassis...

                  • I agree with the 2E designation. The 2G was an upgrade of one of the two 2E's made and had wider and wider wheel flairs/arches as the season went on. The bodywork was massaged a little as well and the power went from a small block chevy engine in the 2E to a large block for the 2G (obviously no big deal in an HO slot car.)

                    • John,SH, that Amrac Manta sure has been discussed here a lot since I have been around. Got me one too! Wish it was blue not yellow. To understand slot car chassis evolution I use the SCC chassis page. Bob discusses Amrac,Cox,Rokar there with pics of chassis examples. I kind of agree with SH,that was the second coming of Can - Am. I saw one quite a few years ago at Mid -Ohio which I believe was a Lola. Supposedly it was Bobby Rahal's old car and I think it was Bud Light liveried. I remember it was white and Mid-Ohio was Bobby's home track.

John, the color is Tamiya "Dark Blue", from a rattle can........

John, at least with my particular body (maybe more plastic underneath), I cannot get it to fit the "M", and the "T" can be forced on, but it doesn't sit right, especially in front, because that can motor is forcing the body upward.
I did not grind out any of the underside with my Dremel tool for clearance (I have done this with a couple of different bodies now and then), and maybe your body just is a bit larger; I don't know

The ONLY thing on the TYCO Chaparral that is not fitting the 2E, is the too tall intake stacks. On the original car, these carburetor intakes were flush with the opening for them. Everything else (especially the top engine cover venting and the dual twin tail lights) are 2E.
Here is an early picture of the "Business End" of my TYCO Chaparral 2J & 2E (I refuse to call it a 2G):

                          IMG_0492.JPG

This clearly shows the distinctive tail light treatment (the 2G had one of these dual lights, turned vertically and mounted in the center, below the exhausts). I added the screening behind the lights and headrest, and have since added slightly larger exhaust tips (painted black), as well as Tomy "Chaparral" front wheels and tires. Both of these are on 440X2 chassis.....

I wonder why TYCO named this the 2G; but then again, they stuck a wing on the 2D, and it never ran in competition in 1966 (with the 327 small block), nor the first two races in 1967 (Daytona & Sebring, with the 427 big block).

                          • SH,I can only imagine the answer to your question is Tyco marketing. When the car was copied on their drawing board it was supposed to be the 2E. By time it was ready for release and to hit the shelves the similar 2G was out. So not to be behind times,Tyco changed the designation to 2G. ???? I sure have seen similar things with diecast cars, the next big thing world beater was copied and then it either flopped or was withdrawn! Which then left the Toy Companies the investment of design, marketing, tooling,in a car that was defunct.

I don't know... Only thing I may have done, is trim
the plastic weld blob for the scoop on the underside...
If it had a blob... Cant tell & have no idea where my
Virgin Manta is to compare... This one has been mounted
on an M-Car chassis for 20+ years... Runs good...

Agree, the T-chassis makes for a stuck-up nose...
Didn't catch that, today... Thanks for pointing it out, SH...

Appears it may be an easy fix... Maybe someone will
                              give it a shot...

                              • This is a great thread. For me, Can-Am is what HO racing was about when I was a kid. If I only had the cars I had in ''68ish. I spent the afternoon here at work cruising the net for cars and came across some cool ones and I snagged them, 70's Aurora cars. New Old Stock, I trust they will run on my track. If not, I can just put them on the shelf and enjoy looking at them...pics to following.
