  • Max Trax vs. TKO Track

I recently received a custom CNC routed slot car track from TKO Tracks/CNC Custom Cutting & Design. I had previously ordered a track from Max Trax with all funds provided upfront, waited almost a year and received nothing including little in the way of communication. I finally was able to get my money back 1 week shy of a year.

Despite some of the comments on the forums about TKO, I found them to be very helpful with layout design, easy to communicate with, and TIMELY. We talked for a while, I told him what I was looking for, he sent me some layout suggestions, we tweeked one a bit, and I ordered a track.

He said approximately 2-3 months. Well, it actually came sooner! Very well packed and secure. I am VERY HAPPY things turned out the way they did. I just had some friends over and ran all four lanes together, the track is smoother than the MT I have been racing on at a friends house for the last three years. I have a six foot wide 4 lane banked turn, something I couldn't get with MT. Todd also helped eliminate a lot of unnecessary joints. I have over a half mile layout on a 6 X 18 table with only 10 joints. With just 3 extra pieces I can make three different layouts. I had him make the track a few inches wider and incorporate built in guard rails, but they are far enough out that a car can spin 180 and not touch it. They only come into play when a car de-slots. He can customize anyway you want.

I still have a few little items to have Todd make for me yet and some more work on the track manager station and pics will follow.

    Tko

I have had an equal experience. I ordered my TKO late last winter early spring....3 weeks later it was done! 6 lane 6x20 around 80 foot lap length. Hope to post some pics soon as I am finally building the table for it.
I would not hesitate to purchase from todd again if need arises.

Sounds cool Batjet. Please post pictures. I am also curious as to how they incorporated guard rails and would like to see that also.

Both of you guys...pics, pics, pics....please!!!

Todd routes a groove into the track for a plastic wall. The wall sits in the groove. It can be glued in by the owner if desired. I didn't glue mine in and have yet to have a wall pop out in a race. Here is a typical example of his walls from my track. As the tracks are designed by CAD the wall location is limited only by your imagination.

This is the same turn viewed from the drivers station. During initial track testing it was found that the car in Yellow lane disappeared behind the supplied white wall. This was fixed by replacing the white plastic wall with a wall that had a clear lexan center section.

This wall protects the cars on the outside curve from cars falling off in the infield. The gap between track and wall allows the cars that fall off to leave the track as opposed to piling up in the yellow lane when they come off. The ribbed foam is a weatherstriping product that helps cushion the impact.

There was a period when what was happening with TKO was scarily similar to what later happened with Max, for the customers anyway, so it could of been a timing thing for you.

You were brave to risk a repeat, and I'm glad that did not happen to you.

Looks like TKO may have turned the corner. Hopefully things work out the same for Maxtrax, We need all the good track builders we can get. There is a post on "Planet of Speed" announcing a new track and parts supplier. Their site is Eliteslotcars dot com. No data other that that.

Pretty sure Elite is Dan Cronin, from the same town as the Bradtracks, weirdly.

I agree on 'good' but we perhaps have a different view on what that is. Taking people's money and not communicating with them does not qualify in my book.

If you write off everyone that made a mistake one day you will be very lonely. If I was in the market for another track I would give him a chance.

Well, that is your prerogative of course, but as we are not talking small sums of money and there are alternatives to TKO and to Max, it seems a needless and extravagant risk to me.

True, communication is not very good with Max. Business has resumed. I got my track later than originally expected and found the delay understandable under the now-past circumstances. Dave came through and I would not hesitate to order from or recommend him to anyone. I believe he has proven himself trustworthy. We shall agree to disagree, Nico.
