Trik Trax Mini-Count 4

That is about what they cost new. I still have one that I am keeping as a backup to Trackmate. The nice thing about the TrikTrax is that no computer or other hardware is needed except for the sensors. If you are using dead strips you have to get the polarity correct or you will miss laps.
I'll bet that there are still a fair number of people that would buy a similar device if such a thing was available.

Depending on how the Trix Trax is architected, I could see making a track input/trigger board that does the track sensing, with a socket to plug in a hobby microcontroller such as the Arduino, or any of the many other options.
Given the vast amount of hobby electronics available today, I think building one of these from "maker" parts would be relatively inexpensive. Once the input/trigger portion of the gizmo was documented, the microcontroller and display parts would be easy to source.
4-digit 7-segment displays are really neat little devices, it's a shame that they can be so cumbersome to control. Well we've solved that problem by making
Plus, you could 3D print the enclosure.

There are ready-made counters, suitable for lap counting, available on eBay. The names of the manufacturers seem to change daily, but there is always something out there that can do the job. Prices vary, but US$10 or so will usually buy you one.
I posted about one particular brand a year or two ago, and reported on some comprehensive testing I did on it. It worked just fine. These days it is an auxiliary to my TrikTrax lap counter, allowing me to count laps while the TrikTrax posts lap times.
If you want a TrikTrax equivalent, go to Pendle Slot Racing and check out the DD-300 line of counter/timers. Much pricier, but in line with what the TrikTrax cost.

Why would anybody want to buy this stuff from Pendle?.

Well, sorry to be blunt about this, but since you asked...
The reason you'd want to shop at Pendle is you can get the 4-lane module for about US$15 more than what you'd pay for the 2-lane module from our website sponsor. I'm not figuring in the cost of shipping.
The 4-lane module at Pendle costs 235 Pounds Sterling, which translates to US$313.46 according to my currency app -- at US$1.33/Pound. That is in contrast to the US$299.99 cost for the 2-lane module at 132slotcar. To add the next two lanes costs another US$164.99. That means I'd save US$178.46 by smuggling in the 4-lane module from the UK. That will swamp any difference in shipping costs.
Look, I understand loyalty and all that, but there is something wildly askew in those comparative prices. It needs explaining. I don't think we can blame this on either Trump or Brexit.
I should mention that I gain nothing by throwing this on the table. Fact is I'm annoying somebody I owe a lot to. I tried to be oblique about this, and it didn't work.
Please go ahead and check my numbers. I don't think I've made a mistake -- I've checked and double-checked. Heck, I've triple-checked. Still, I'd love to be wrong.
