The TrikTrax toggles between counting and timing laps. There was an eight lane version that could count and time four lanes at the same time. There is a button on top of the unit that switches between the counting and timing modes and also clears out the lap counts. My unit has an optional connection for a remote toggle button.
Any sort of sensor can be connected, photoresistors, photodiodes, magnetic reed switches and dead strips all work. The unit seems to have protection so that dead strips without guard strips can be connected. There are probably zener diodes to keep track voltage from burning out the unit. The display uses LEDs, rather than the more common LCD type display.
