  • 1961 Ford Ranchero

Got this Ranchero body from an AMT kit mounted on a Slot Classics Universal Chassis with a Piranha Motor and wood track guide. That inline motor chassis let me mount the body without cutting up the interior or bed. Still plan to add chrome trim and chop off some axle since it has a narrow wheelbase. It runs fine with this combo of parts. IMG_1412.JPG

Nice looking color Van. What did you use for paint? John Kit of Toronto & You Tube built a 1/32 Ranchero with a scratchbuilt chassis about a year ago. His build was covered in 2 or 3 videos about a half hour each. I'm old enough to have built a 1/24 Ranchero when the kits were first issued in 1961.Mine was painted black & later given to a brother with most of my other model cars & kits. I was a dedicated model car builder until slot car racing came into my area in the fall of 1967.

Thanks Bill: The color is by Dupli-Color in Medium Garnet Red Metallic. I had a brass scratch-built chassis and a Universal plastic one which fit better in this Ranchero so that is what I used. Like you I was building plastic 1/24 scale kits in the late 60s. When slots came along about 1965 I was in junior high and started converting kits to slot cars for racing on commercial tracks. Van, thanks for the paint info & photo of your chassis. Your scratchbuilt one reminds me of some I've seen built on the Home Racing World board. I've been primarily a 1/24 builder, but I have no home track. If I did, it'd be 1/32 scale. There are some pretty neat cars in both scales.

Here's a 1/32, 3D, 1954, Studebaker Conestoga, car that I did a while back. The body was done by a reader here, but it's been a while and don't recall his name.
Since this picture, yes, the grill and window trim is painted, the head light lenses and tail light lenses are in place. I also better fit and glued in the windshield. I shoulda cleaned the rubber off of the windows before the picture !
I have a full sized Stude Conestoga that's light blue. I had intended on painting this car, but decided that I like the primer. The wheels are NASCAR wheels that are as close as I could come to Halibrand wheels that are on the full sized car.
I have a 1/24 wagon that I also built, that I did paint light blue with touchup paint, so it's very close to the real color.

Mike, thanks for the great photo & explanation. I did not know that the Conestoga body existed in the Studebaker lineup. When I was a kid, the Maine State Police used black '53 & '54 Studebakers for their cruisers. I'm now past 70, but have never seen the wagon-style body. Thanks for sharing your photo.

AMT's Nova Wagon makes for a pretty good conversion as well...

Is the Nova wagon a regular model kit or a "snap-tite" kit? I have the AMT kit for a Chevelle wagon. I was able to find it about 10 years ago for $5 at a "Big Lots" store. At one time, both the Nova & Chevelle wagons were popular in 1:1 drag racing.

1:25 normal plastic kit. Not “Snap-Tite”. Great model.
Used a BRM Chassis I got here from Alan.

I'll have to look for one of those kits the next time I go shopping. I have access to CB wheels.

Pic of CB Wheel size I used.

Quick Slicks FL91 or HRO1 tires.
Alan / 132Slotcar may have a comparable tire He offers.

                      Wheel well space is tight.
You'll need to tinker with Chassis alignment and clearance, while allowing for "Body Float".

Great jobs on those wagons. Got my 32 Chevy pickup on chassis today. Linberg 1/32 scale is a bit small for 1/32 but I like some of these kits. I need to order some smaller wheels and tires though. Windshield and top glued on with flexible goop glue so I hope it stays on. IMG_1451.JPG

Thanks... Good job as well on your '32.
A lot of work to get it sitting just right.

Couple more 1/25's using the same "formula" as the Nova.
