Bruce....I can't speak for others but a decent Fly car, with the "right" tyres of course, , will be very competitive on my track. The 908/3's and Chevron's go particularly well.

I've just spent a little time sorting out a Lola T70, fitting BWA wheels and inserts, Slot.it gears and axles, Ortmans and a Fly Racing Guide and it is now one of the quickest cars I own. I was very tempted to enter this car in the Prototype class, (and will probably regret not doing so...)

Phil.....My standard BMW, with just a change of rear tyres goes very well. The standard tyres give no grip at all I'm afraid....Also mine has no added weight, which will probably come as a shock to your system......

Light cars with Ortmann tires are the fastest on my track. East New York is fast for a short track; mileage piles up rapidly, and mileage is what wins the GPR, not the number of laps. With a 5.3 second lap time for a very fast car, expect up to 130 laps in a 12 minute heat; 7,930 feet travelled, or 2,417 meters.

One lap is 61 feet, or 18.59 m, one of the shortest tracks in GPR. The winter lap record is 5.0 sec/lap, or 12.2 feet per second (3.718m/s). This summer, cars got down into the 4.8's.

Alan - Well my entry is just the way the stork dropped off this baby...other than a little oil & lube. Have you ever had the chance to try the Fly D-type race tires? They like my plastic a lot, and I believe Van gave them good marks on his Porsche in testing on wood.

Bruce...Sorry I've never tried them, the Fly Classic tires work fairly well provided they are kept clean, but the later Fly standard tires as fitted to the 250 GTO, Porsche Carrera, BMW M1, BMW 3.5CSL don't work very well at all.

I sure hope your crown gear holds up, Bruce, every Fly racing car I have has stripped the gear.

Pete - Yeah, that is a bit of concern from your's and others' experiences with the crown (though so far so good for me)...maybe I might switch to a nylon pinion before it goes on its globe-trotting this afternoon???

I think they just have excessive play between the pinion and crown?

Pete - I found using the motor shaft to set the gear mesh play "interesting" when I returned to slots with my first RTR's, but I soon came to not like the amount of play it allowed for and whenever possible (when I can get the wheels off without harm) set the tolerance with spacers. Couldn't easily get the one's off the Capri (at least I won't need to worry about having a loose wheel) so I guess I'll see how a factory race car fares against the competition

I forgot yours has plastic wheels, mine has Aluminum wheels with set screws. But the axles are larger than Slot it, so I had to drill the crown out a bit. Good Luck, Bruce!!! This is going to be a lot of fun!!

Nope, they got them stronium (whatever way it's spelt) wheels...more like ceramic than plastic...and on there good and tight. Since the (less preferable) wheels seem to be the only change to this latest race version, think I'll pick up another "older" one as I already miss it.

I would bet that it's just heavily filled thermoplastic, probably glass filled Nylon, to increase strength and dimensional stability. I can't imagine making ceramic slot car wheels, although they could probably be quite light and strong, they would also be expensive.

The alarming news that the infamous Canadian driver, "Won'twin Nuthin" and his Co-driver "Sumthin O'Nuthin" were to enter the GPR sent the Midford Combe Management Committee into a state of panic. They immediatley ordered the maintenance crew to erect additional track barriers to prevent wayward Porsche's damaging delicate rock faces.

We can only hope their work is adequate:-

The photo also shows that I don't just build Ferrari's, but even the occasional Porkie......

Wow, beautiful Pooch there, Alan, and some nicely decorated barriers! I'm sure that "Won'twin O'nuttin" will remove some of those banners with his "Stuttgart Scraper"!
