I don't profess to know much about this stuff, but would be nervous using wax; isn't it essentially a cutting agent? Could play hell with your decals, I'm thinking. Keeping in mind that while I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about, but Robert Schleicher might, his recipe for completing the Viper on the cover of Issue #29 included at least one application of Testor's GlossCote, then after it had dried completely the Future acrylic covering.
    Hey Paul,

I guess I'm a little nervous about Future reacting with the white paint. If the cars were any other colour I wouldn't worry about it. I will give the cars a coat of Tamiya clear since for sure that will be compatible with the Tamiya paint underneath. I picked up a Turtle Wax product called ICE that is a "Synthetic Spray Detailer" for "a brilliant shine between regular wax applications". I might test it out on one of my other cars before going for it.

    • GT entry taking shape

Well, here goes... there's a strange shape in the body shop right now...

Still running absolutely stock (and still whooping all my NASCARs so I'm pretty pleased. Am still awaiting some new boots from BWA and have repainted the original wheels to match those of the real car. They're remarkably true now after many years of apparent use.

Other than that I'm ordering a V12/3 to try out (but would hate to upset the balance - this is a sweet one), juggling ballast and thinking about weathering the old girl a bit.

Looks much better like this than the old 'nose high' Scalextric stance. Reworking the chassis would be beyond me though, sadly!

      Now then... where's that 917K?!?!?

      • Looking good, Nick! The Porsche Paddock is filling up!

So I shot a coat of Tamiya TS13 clear on both cars this a.m. and headed off to work. When I got home this evening, both cars had a great glossy finish. I should have shot a bit more on the sides, but it seems to have worked out ok...especially since my paint jobs have mostly sucked up until now.

I've been giving both cars repeated coats of the Turtle Wax iCE product. I'm not sure if its doing much since the Tamiya clear came out pretty good to start with. I've been working on putting non-functional lights in the 936.

I ditched the 2mm thick MRRC lenses that came with the 936 in favor of bits of clear blister pack cut out to fit. I guess I should do the same thing for my Scaley MG Lolas some time. I even made an amber marker light on top of the airbox with a dot of yellow paint, and a built up little blob of Micro Kristal Klear.

I used a similar technique to make some tail lights: painting some styrene stock red and then building up layers of Micro Kristal Klear over it.

The Micro Kristal Klear goes on white like in the photo above but dries clear. Great stuff! You can just keep building up layers of it.

Painting weatherstripping on the 911 was tough. I'll have to figure out a better technique for that.

I'm sure by the time these cars are done, my modelling skill level might hit "2" on the Airfix scale. Patience is a virtue, that's for sure. Looking forward to some track testing at Raceworld on Friday.

          • Nice looking Porsches Doc. I'm inspired to tackle decalling my 911. Like Pete says, none of us look all that hot when the camera is in that close.
            Cheers,
            Greg

            • Those black rubber weatherstrip lines are hard to do well. Have you tried a Sharpie? A small brush needs to be well loaded with paint, and when you drag it, it cannot shake. A lot easier said than done. These two cars were done in aluminum paint with a small brush. If the imperfections are small enough, you get away with it:

That Brumos livery is still available, Greg. Too bad the Pattos decals don't have the "Garrard Turntables" sponsorship. If you stick with one brand of product for paint and finish it seems to go pretty smothly, esp. if your brand is Tamiya. Nice looking trim, Robert.

I noticed and was about to place a patto's order. I'm contemplating skipping the painting on a white body and going straight to decals with future on top. Is that a bad idea - and why? Is it possible that is why my modelling skills are still 1 on the Monogram scale?

Hmm, interesting! There will be one more Porche entered in GT, but it will be a Canon livery, eh Van?

You'll get a better and more consistent finish with the paint. You'll also get any imperfections out of the body with a little love. I'm really pleased with the Tamiya. You can work on a car about an hour after spraying it.

                        • I agree with Robert on the Sharpie, although I think he is a bit better with them than me. They also make a silver Sharpie!!! The secret weapon for chrome trim!

I'll have to agree with Alan also, since I'm entering a Ferrari too!

                          • Watch out with a Sharpie as Future will dissolve the ink and make it run. I found this out the hard way last year with my RAA 956. Since I sealed my models with Tamiya clear, I went ahead and applied Future over top. My hope is that the clear will keep the Future from yellowing the paint on my GPR cars.

I've used the silver Sharpie to paint under car features like exhaust pipes and transmission detail.

                            • One of our local craft stores has a range of Sharpies that use paint rather than ink, in a number of colors from black and white through silver and gold and a bunch in between. The Sharpies come in a number of thicknesses too, but only the ultra-fine (about 0.9mm) and fine are really any use to us. Looks to me like the paint is an enamel, so it should resist the Future. I haven't gotten far enough with my GPR car to find out yet.

                              • GPR 917....coming alive!

Its painted. Thought I'd try a different shade of green. I'm going to attempt to paint a thin black stripe on both sides of the silver center stripe and weather the thing a bit. Livery will go on next then it will get some clear.

                                Enjoy,
                                Terry
