This is the Capri you are referring to? The legal maximum width is 2.6" for GPR cars. The Fly Racing Porsche 911 is 2.45". The 936 is 2.44".

      • DV - Not the Capri, but Pete's A2M Fiat Group 5 he just posted up over on the Scratch Board.

Pete - Now that is wide...thought the SCX Cupra was one of the widest, but it's only 2 5/8". Oh well, back to the drawing boards...

        • I got some more work done on my Porsche 936 tonight.

I was able to cut open all the air vents and hood scoop, as well as make some room under the body so the wheels of the HRS chassis don't rub. I installed a tow hook on the lower valence:

I installed a splitter in the newly opened up cowl air intake, and replaced the molded in driver with a Fly Viper half driver and light weight styrene pan.

I ground down the sides of the HRS so the wheels could be set in further. I also profiled the tire sidewalls on the rear wheels so that they did not bind against the chassis or bodywork. The stock tires really extend past the wheel quite a bit. I chucked the axle in my Dremel and spun the tire's sidewall against a large flat file. This allowed me to evenly shave the sidewall down.

The HRS front wheels are a press fit. I ground down the back shoulder of the front wheels so they too could sit further inboard.

I'm hoping to shoot some primer within the next few days and hit the track at Raceworld next week.

          • That looks really cool Dr V !!

Can we run a side wager as to how long the tow hook lasts?

A variation of the Martini shaken not stirred color scheme in the wings?

            Cheers, Tony.

            • I like that tall snorkel on the 936. Those things were outlawed at Le Mans in later years, but JGTC cars still have them.

If you want lots of weight transfer during cornering, but don't want to add much ballast, try filling the snorkel with lead. This worked well for me, on a no-mag Scalextric F1 car.

You can buy flexible, tough plastic tow rings from Slot.It in the parts package for the Nissan 390 (SICS04P). Two of them in the package. If you glue them on with a flexible glue like Goop, they should stay on through the whole race series.

I'll be testing this car a bit tonight. Maybe I'll give that a shot. The boxer motor is quite heavy though. The car needs a bit more weight further forward, if anything.

The fabricators at DrVanski Racing spent several painstaking minutes fabricating the aforementioned tow hook out of the highest quality Evergreen styrene plastic (aka white strontium). I've found that goop doesn't stick very well, especially in small quantities. A big glob of Goop wouldn't look very nice (looks could be important, eh Robert?), and there's not too much room in the nose of this car. Tamiya liquid styrene cement is my glue of choice for this type of material. It smells good too.

In the mean time, I've installed vent baffles in the nose intake that reflect those installed on the 1:1 version of the 936. It's fun making little detail-y bits out of plast...er...strontium. It's amazing the number of 'versions' of the 936 that were tested and raced. Tough to say if there was ever a definitive version of the car.

Your Capri is looking very Mad Max, Reckless.

Ha ha, they always go faster without them pesky interiors, drivers and window glass. You think you have a winner, and you put in the glass/interior/driver, and you actually have a wiener. As in dog.

I have resorted to vac-formed glass, a .010" sheet of styrene for the interior, and transfer of roll cage, fire bottles, and driver head from the original, plus hand made other details. This interior is held in place so it can rattle, with styrene strontium clips.

                    • I tested my Porsche 936 and 911 tonight on The Coffin. I ended up chewing up the Fly crown gear in the 911 so it's due for a Slot.it rebuild. The 936 was faster than A NINCO Mosler by 8/100ths at 7.700s on The Coffin. To put things in perspective, the fastest RAA GT car was in the 8.6s range. I had gotten the 936 down to 8.2s with Slot.it P2 tires, until Reckless set me up with some Gel Claws. Wowsers! Another half a second handed to me. Thanks, Eric! Needless to say, I am thrilled with the HRS boxer chassis. The tow hook survived many racing incidents vs. Reckless' 908. So far...so good...and that was with my driver!

                      • Question from an Intern ...

... you running that thing with the HRS chassis with stock 24k motor and 9:28 gearing?

Is there a mag in it?

                        One has to ask, eh?

                        • I can't say whether the Doc was running stock gearing last night or not, but in my 908 I have installed the new 21k orange motor, geared 9:27 and there was nothing between our two cars in progress. We ran lap after lap, side by side .... just great racing! And yes, the mags were on the fridge!

I tried a few different gear ratios in and around the stock range + or - two teeth in each direction and no magnutz. Now if only I could find a longtail 936, I'd have an RAA car as well.

                            • Wow everyone, I cannot wait to see all these cars in action!

As for me out here in the Pearl of the Gulf, I am now furiously getting an entry ready for each class:

Prototype: Fly Porsche 917K Gulf #20 Le Mans 1970 body on ABSlotsport Can Am steel chassis
GT: Scalextric Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Tissot #61 Le Mans 1974 running Slot.It internals and BWA wheels

If I get them into anything like a good enough state I'll be putting pictures up!

That AB Slotsport chassis is a real cracker and goes very well, If you mate if with a Eurosport motor it is a very potent combination. I have one Ralph Parker, (the chassis designer) built and it is a real flyer........

                                Mmmmm.....Need more power....Need more power......
