    RAAcing and racing

Any idea of how long the qualifying sessions will run, compared to the race time?

Oh, do please try to avoid any real time conflicts with events in Bahrain, eh?

    Hi Paul,

Racing will get under way at 10 a.m. EST on each day. I need to do a bit more ciphering to determine the length of qualifying heats. The race itself will most likely be a series of 1 or 2 minute heats depending on the number of drivers on the day.
You KNOW where I'll be Sunday morning. indeed!

          What kinds

Reckless, DV, what kinds of cars do well at The Coffin?

The track surface is painted so the traction will be different than the other Sport tracks. I think tire selection will play a large role here maybe even more than other sport tracks. I'm trying to remember I think it is Super2ner that painted his sport track and mentioned that Ortmann tires do not do well on the painted surface.
I know one car that will not be doing well in the mag classA certain red Fly racing Lola, I told Dr V not to bother running it as it has no chance of placing in the top 28 out of 29 entries. (just a guess at the LMP entries)
            Thank You

              B-52 Lmp Update

THE GOOD NEWS ..... the B-52 Newman Porsche is NOT contacting the rails as previously purported.

THE BAD NEWS ..... The "snapping" sound which I believed to be arcing noise, is actually the sound of the front end of the chassis flexing along a crack. The guide post support is also broken, a piece fell out when I took the body off. Unfortunately this car has taken a hard hit somewhere along the RAA sojourn.

Nonetheless, the car still runs very well, turning respectable sub 7 second laps. The handling does not seem to be affected, guide is still turning smoothly. I will JB-Weld the crack and guide post, if requested by B-52.

              My sympathies to B-52!

That is an ugly break, no amount of CA is going to fix that. Too bad Derek stopped making his wonderful aluminum guide mounts or the fix would be easy. Short of replacing the chassis how do you fix it to conform to the "no metal to reinforce the guide mount" rule?
oops I guess you can use metal to reinforce the guide in the LMP class.
This is what I do to my proslot cars WHEN the guide mount breaks on them.

Regarding El Secundo's query ..... I think the fastest laps [so far] have been turned by the scaley MG lola, and also the Fly B-98 lola with the racing motor. Both cars were equipped with Supertires and turned just below 6 seconds at best. Since I've painted the track, tire choice is less important. I think Supertires [or PPR's to others] are the best tire on this circuit, but Ortmann's are not much behind. Even stock tires are really much better since the "resurfacing".

Regarding Mr. Bugs comments ..... why don't I put a magnet in the Lola for you? Let me know, I'd be glad to help if I can.

I wish you could RECKLESS but Austin found his gavel and has ruled no new magnet can be fitted in my Lola
I'm a big boy I can take it, I screwed up when I MADE the magnet for that car. I was so concerned that I would fry the motor with too much magnet that I put to little in and I obviously used the wrong type because they are not doing anything now.
I made the magnet from 4 tiny CDROM magnets each one measured 2mm x 3mm and I used a lot of CA to bind them together. I should have just stuck a Scaley bar mag in the car but oh well, live and learn. It will gracefully bow out of the competition to let more adept builders race.

Were these RAA cars, or just some cars you had lying around the house?

Checking the rules for the metal near the guide mount thing I realized that maybe I can get the magnet (S) in my Lola replace with ONE magnet under the rule of only 1 magnet allowed?
Since I built my magnet from 4 small magnets is it illegal and therefore needs to be replaced?

Talk about nitpicking the rules… but if it works
                          Thank You

El Secundo ..... well, currently the RAA cars are lying around the house but actually, I was talking about 2 cars out of my personal collection. Both Lola's were basically stock, but lubed and trued, with supertires added. The fly Motorola Lola B-98 with the racing motor is quite a handful though - yes you can turn a sub 6 second lap, but the next thing you know it has decided to take flight into the lower atmosphere. The scaley MG lola is more stable in handling, and will also turn sub 6 second laps. As far as RAA cars, in the few laps with Bill Pederson's MG Lola I think a 5.8 lap was witnessed!

Official lap times will be posted after Friday's qualifying sessions

                              Her name was Lola...

In all this time, I've hardly had a chance to try a Scaley Lola until this past Saturday. I tried two, and they both screamed -- straight out of the box, sub 7 second laps on a 95 foot track. Stable, with the perfect amount of braking. I was really impressed, and they were so easy to drive at the limit. I see why they're so good at The Coffin.

Have you tried many of the RAA cars yet?

Makes sense to me. In a parallel thread, Bart was required to remove his illegal magnet immediately to bring his GTS car into compliance.

                                At that time, Robert said:
According to the race records, Bart was actually in 16th place in GT, with 157.4 laps. Mark T (15th) had 157.6, and Fireball (17th) had 156.5. If you subtract 10 laps penalty, Bart receives credit for only 147.4 laps, and would place between Vanski (148.2) and Recklessracer (146.6). According to Austin's list, he is placed AHEAD of Vanski, so he really only lost 9 laps!
So it might be deduced from this precedence that the appropriate penalty would be a ten - or, maybe, nine - lap deduction, with consequent points loss once calculated, from the Ace RAAce. Being unfeasible to send the car back to Brent at this stage, having RecklessRacer install a proper magnet would appear to be a solution; don't want to see Brent having to drop out over this, it's unfortunate enough that Vanski will not be able to continue his LMP foray.

No doubt, there will be other opinions?
