  • Announcing The Last Open Road Proxy Series Races for 2017

THE LAST OPEN ROAD PROXY Mark V 2017
Here are the rules for this year's Last Open Road Proxy Series. As you can see they are “relatively” unchanged from last year's regulations...

Cars should be scale representations of period sports cars mentioned and raced in B.S. Levy’s first 4 novels, The Last Open Road, Montezuma’s Ferrari, Fabulous Trashwagon and/or Toly’s Ghost. Recommended reading for you while your car is away from home racing its guts out.

Numbers will be assigned on a first come, reservation system. No duplications. Car is to be shipped for tech inspection 2 weeks prior to the first race, estimated on March 15, 2017. Label each car with your name on the bottom for easy identification. Include a list of specs so we may describe each car which we will photograph for all participants on SCI. A return address label is also recommended and appreciated.

    1. Only enclosed fender Race Cars (cycle fenders are okay) mentioned in the first 4 books of Burt "BS" Levy's "The Last Open Road" series of books ('The Last Open Road,' 'Montezuma's Ferrari', 'The Fabulous Trashwagon and Toly’s Ghost '[to 1957]) are eligible.
This race series is a “builders” series with a concours d’eleganz included in the final results (I'd like us to “up our game” from year to year). Winners in each class will be determined by participant’s choice, with 10 Points awarded for best in each class and 20 points for “best of show” which will be added to the overall series racing points totals.

    2. Cars will be 1/32 scale and run in two classes. A. small bore (cars 2 litres and under) and B. large bore (cars over 2 litres)

    3. All cars will cover the tires as viewed from above, and at least a helmeted head and shoulders of the driver, plus as much of the dashboard as would be normally visible from the side.

    4. Cars will have simulated headlights and tail lights, wheels of proper detail (inserts to you), and windscreens as appeared on the actual car. Roll over bars may not be period but are not disallowed.

    5. All cars will be scale replicas of the original cars, in both track and wheelbase plus or minus 1/8" (one eighth of an inch) or 4 (four) scale inches Absolute max width of car cannot be more than 2.25 inches, unless documentation is provided. Track maximum is 2.0 inches measured from outermost-to outermost wheel/tire.

    6. Min. ground clearance 3/32nds of an inch for the lowest part of the car and/or body. No part of the car may touch the track except the tires and the guide. No part of the guide, nor edges of tires may be visible when viewed from above. Only sidewinder and anglewinder sprocket gears may be within .05 in. and not subject to the 3/32 clearance rule.

    7. Tires:
Rears: 0.80" (20.32mm) minimum diameter, maximum width .276" (7.25mm). at sidewall
Fronts: 0.75" (19.05mm) minimum diameter, Maximum width .276" (7.25mm). at sidewall. Track from rule 5 is the outside of each tire or wheel. Rubber or urethane tire compound, must be black (or kinda), no chemicals or oil.

    8. Traction magnets are not allowed. But you know this. Lead adhered to the bottom is prohibited. Non metallic sealing of the bottom will safeguard from blown track fuses.

    9. Since the cars listed below, for the most part, raced in Levy's fictional "SCMA" (Sports Car Motoring Association) association as amateur racers, liveries are the entrant's choice, except that they must be consistent with the period dealt with in the books..(1952-1957)

    10. Motors: are not to be tampered with, signs of which can deem car ineligible.

    Class A Choose from a list of six motors. These are around 14.000 rpm @12v: BWANC1, BWA 050, M/T-1, M/T SL-1, Ninco NC-1, Ninco NC-8.

Class B. Choose from a list of 5 common available motors These are around 18K @12v: Scalextric/Scalextric Sport standard FC-130, Carrera E200, Fly black-striped, FC-130, Pioneer “small and large p” Typhoon, H&R Racing “Hawk” Motor, Slotit SP08 and "Teal" endbell motors. Motor RPMS will be checked by Dyno, any motors found to be out of compliance (too fast)will be disqualified

    11. Chassis may be purchased or built. Stock or modified.

    12. Inline, sidewinder or angle winder motor arrangements are all legal. Gear ratio is uncontrolled, as track designs vary.

    13. Car bodies must be of any "hard body" material… no vacuum formed bodies are legal.

    14. Eligible bodies

Dodge D500, Chrysler 300: mentioned early in Toly’s Ghost. If you choose to enter either car, livery should be authentic to the period.
Cars of La Carrera PanAmericana: There were many American cars that participated in “La Carrera”. The race ran from 1950 – 1954. I will allow period American street cars from those years to participate, so long as they follow the aforementioned rules and can be documented as a car that ran in the race. Also the entered car’s livery must be “in the spirit of those cars that ran” the race (look at period photos of cars from La Carrera… more flamboyant). No American period NASCAR type or dirt track race car will be permitted. No arguments…

Weight limits unrestricted. Class A ranged from 67 to 83 grams averaging 75g. Class B cars weighed between 64 and 91 grams averaging 79g. per car. So why restrict it?

Numbers (2 displayed on each car) will be assigned on a first come, reservation system. No duplications. Car is to be shipped for tech inspection 2 weeks prior to the first race (NLT March 15th). Estimated first race on March 15, 2017. Label each car with your name on the bottom for easy identification. Include a list of specs (as seen below) so we may describe each car which we will photograph for all participants on SCI.
    Car:
    Chassis:
    Motor:
    Gears and Ratio:
    Wheels:
    Tires:
Notes: (if there is something specific to the car that you would like to pass on)

A return address label is also recommended and appreciated.

Address all questions, complaints and general grumbling to your significant other... `cos I ain't listening!

Entry fee is $35 per car per class with a $5 discount for a second car running in the same class.

Cars should be sent to: Greg Petrolati
    929 Jackson St.
    Lafayette, OR 97127
    USA

No later than March 1st 2017

If you have questions or suggestions regarding the rules please post them below.

    Thanks

Count me in Greg, I'll probably re submit my D type Jag #18 for class B. I'll have to give a little thought to a class A car, My RSK didn't do so well last year.

I did notice two other dates mentioned in the rules, these may confuse some!

Greg, I know the Lotus 7 came out in 1957 but I can't remember if it is mentioned in any of the books. Do you know?

Should be able to finish these this time:
                    A: #88 TR3; B: #59 Ferrari TR

Does anyone make wire wheel inserts for slot car corner insert 15x7 rims?

Great Lakes Club can host again, Meadowdale and Riverside replica 3-lane wood tracks.

EM: All four wheels are 15x7, no wide ones allowed.

I have fitted turned down Ninco Classic wires to these rims. The problem is that since they have "internal" hubs, the depth available to fit the inserts is small - probably OK for the TR, problematic for the wider rear wheels of a TR. OTOH, they are very useful when one is hard pressed for space to squeeze wheels within the fenders.

Still looking for something for class A. I have a couple more Strombecker Porsches that still have the open Scuttler motor, they perform about as well as the Porsche I ran last year. Problem is they would need warm up laps before every race.
I have a couple of 356s to fool with, maybe I'll try to find a 550.

                              Woohoo! More TLOR!

                              I'm in for #44 and #45.

I have done a full restoration on both cars I entered last time, and they now have "professional" paint jobs and the Alfa has a new body that no longer binds against the wheels.

#44 is the Ferrari 166MM Barchetta, and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder will be #45.

Good to see this thing going for another round, and the timing is great.
