  • Scale plaster walls

Has anyone made simulated plaster walls? If so what did you use?

I've used wall spackle from Home Depot right out of the container to create cliffs on my layout. Applied it with a metal spatula and detailed it with an old table knife, a pic and various other tools to give it a "rocky" look. Then gave it a wash with some diluted acrylic paints. Easy job that didn't take too long. This picture shows one of the places on my layout where I used this.

Plaster or stucco? There may be something here: https://www.sketchuptextureclub.com/

I've done a ton of stuff in plaster. What do you mean by "walls"?

I want to simulate a vintage downtown area with old buildings where you might have seen porsche 917s etc. I have only seen a few pics on slot mods website for example but i really like that look. And RichD was right im not sure if plaster or stucco i am just not sure how to make it happen.

OK, I got ya. Check out my Steve McQueen Le mans thread, as I made a couple "stucco" buildings in it.

When you spread plaster on the outside of a building it is referred to as stucco.

When I built my hill climb I used Hydrocal. It is very light weight, easy to use and you can get it pretty cheap at a sculpture supply store. To make the rock faces I simply used wrinkled aluminum foil as the mold and I bought a Bragonet brand stone face rubber mold for the curved wall above the grass. IT worked great and they are available as stone, brick etc.

As is hinted at the by talented folks above, the model railroad landscaping world is your friend. Hydrocal is really fun to play with imo. There are, of course, multiple landscaping products. A couple of big name suppliers can be found by searching for Woodland Scenics and Scenic Express.

For buildings there are built ups, kits and parts available, and the InterWeb is full of tips for scratch-building and making things cheaply. Landscaping supplies are also fun. Perhaps purchase an inexpensive building kit that suits your time period, and see how it goes? If you are a stickler for scale, be aware that model railroad buildings at 1:87 may appear a tad small in our 1:64 world.

                        All the best wishes!

NCSS is absolutely right about railroad landscaping as the "go to hobby" for help. You can find some of their products, such as hydrocal, cheaper elsewhere as they market and package for convenience.

As much as I'm itching to get a track down and race, the scenery is like a whole new hobby that I really enjoy.
